A "Standard" Client with a 152 cm Waist: Tailoring a Drysuit for a Titan When Regular Patterns Failed
In diving, people often say, "Water is the great equalizer." But to get into that water comfortably, you first need the right gear. While tanks and regulators are generally universal, a drysuit is a second skin. And "skin" comes in very different shapes and sizes.
Recently, a student approached our ambassador in Moscow, Julia Minaeva. The request sounded simple: "I want to order a custom-made drysuit." We nodded, picked up the forms, and... went a little quiet when we saw the numbers.
The "Student" Turned Out to be a Real-Life Giant
We see the term "custom tailoring" often. Usually, this just means adjusting the length of sleeves or legs. But here, we faced a challenge on an engineering level.
The guy was truly non-standard. Judge for yourself—here are his specs:
• 📏 Height: 182 cm (quite standard)
• 💪 Chest: 146 cm
• 📏 Waist: 152 cm
• 📏 Hips: 146 cm
This isn't just "plus size"; this is a physique that doesn't fit into the size chart of any global manufacturer. Simply scaling up an XXL pattern was impossible—it would have resulted in a shapeless sack with the wrong fit.
Technology in Action: 3D Modeling
To ensure the suit fit perfectly—rather than hanging like a parachute or pinching under the arms—we ditched the old-school methods.
We applied 3D modeling technology.
We created a virtual twin of our client and built the suit patterns directly onto him in a digital space. This allowed us to account for every feature of his figure (such as the ratio of waist volume to chest volume) before the scissors ever touched the fabric.
Problems Don't Come Alone: Boots, Hands, and Neck
Sewing the "shell" of the suit was only half the battle. Then came the nuances where a standard atelier would have given up.
1. Boots and Wide Calves
Our hero has powerful legs. Standard drysuit boots simply wouldn't connect with the pant leg due to the volume of his calf.
✅ The Solution: We manufactured special drysuit boots via a custom order. We widened the entry point and reinforced the structure to keep his feet comfortable.
2. A Fist Like a Sledgehammer
Wrist circumference: 21 cm. The fist itself is a real hammer. Standard plastic rings for dry gloves simply wouldn't fit over his hand. And diving in cold water without dry gloves is a dubious pleasure.
✅ The Solution: We reached out to our old friends and partners in Lithuania—Dive Point.
The guys understood the situation and machined custom rings with an increased diameter and a replaceable seal system specifically for our client. Now his hand passes through freely, and the seal is airtight.
3. A Neck That Doesn't Choke
Neck circumference: 54 cm. If we used a standard latex seal here—even the largest one—the diver would risk compressing his carotid arteries.
✅ The Solution: We custom-made a special neoprene neck seal. It is softer, more elastic, and was cut precisely for this heroic circumference.
The Result
The suit is finished, delivered, and already bringing joy to its owner. In the photo, you can see the result of our work.
This case proved to us once again: there are no "non-standard" people, only lazy manufacturers. Diving is accessible to everyone, whether you are a petite girl or a mighty giant. The main thing is the right approach and expert tailoring.
