Yesterday (1st March 2025) my Hong Kong Olympic gymnast SHEK Wai Hung has officially retired from his 18 years international professional gymnast career, and started his coaching position in the Hong Kong Gymnastics Team. My first impression to him was 25 years ago, when I trained myself in the former HK team training venue "龍騰館”, I met with this kid. He did double salto to me and asked me whether I could do this skill, I did my double salto to response him.
Afterwards, he competed in the national competitions. During 2006 National Junior Championships, he suffered from a serious injury. He insisted to continue gymnastics training and speedy recovered. One year later, He firstly competed in the World Championships in Stuttgart. And never absented in all World championships during his whole career.
From my first international judging in the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games, I witnessed most of the important achievements of him. Including three times qualified to Olympic Games (through 2012 London Test Event, 2019 Stuttgart World Championships and 2024 Doha World Cup), two times Asian Games Champions (Incheon 2014, Jakarta 2018). During this 14 years, I always supported and provided him my professional advice regardless no reward and official recognition.
I remembered that the most difficult period was during Paris Olympic Cycle, he suffered from serious injury, and faced a dilemma in competing either World Championships or Asian Games. I fully supported him to make the best choice for Hong Kong gymnastics, and resisted some undesirable pressure from someone. Finally, we proved that we were correct, Shek Wai Hung represented Hong Kong Gymnastics again to performing his two vaults in Paris Olympic Games!
I fully recognised his contribution to Hong Kong gymnastics. He is the only gymnast could perform both highest difficulty vaultings (Ri Se Gwang 1 & 2) in the both World Championships and Olympic Games, after North Korean World cm Olympic Champion Ri Se Gwang. He is the only Hong Kong gymnast could defeat the two different Olympic cm World Champions in two Asian Games. And he is the only Hong Kong gymnast awarded FIG "International Gymnast" by becoming World finalist for four times!
As the new beginning of his coaching career, I wish him all the best and develop another new "SHEK Wai Hung"!
