In onoarea unui mare maestru...rest in peace
It is with deep sorrow and profound respect that we acknowledge the passing of Ralph “Snake” Smith, who departed this life on June 4, 2026, at the age of 73.
A proud member of the Isshinryu Hall of Fame, inducted in 2010, and lifelong member and proud representative of the IIKA orginization, Ralph dedicated his life to the art, spirit, and tradition of Isshinryu Karate. Rising to the rank of 9th Dan, he was known across generations as a fierce competitor, accomplished instructor, and passionate ambassador of the style he loved.
For more than four decades, Ralph stood among the toughest kumite competitors in Isshinryu, continuing to test himself well into his 50s. Yet those who knew him best will remember that behind the intensity of competition was a man of warmth, humility, and friendship. He fought hard, respected everyone, and when the matches were over, he was often the first one there with a smile, a handshake, or a hug.
Ralph’s legacy extends far beyond trophies, titles, or rank. His impact lives on through the countless students he taught, the friendships he forged, and the example he set through a lifetime devoted to Isshinryu Karate.
On behalf of the Isshinryu Hall of Fame, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife Theresa, his children, grandchildren, friends, students, and all whose lives were touched by his presence.
Today, we honor not only a Hall of Fame member, but a beloved member of the Isshinryu family.
Rest in peace, Ralph “Snake” Smith.
Your legacy endures.
Your spirit remains.
And your place in Isshinryu history is forever secure.
