These are the long overdue interviews with the winners of the Pandanet Pair Go Championship, Manja Marz and Kim Youngsam Kim, that took place during EGC2014.
It comes really easy to me to like most people but these two I especially liked. Don't know why, maybe you'll find some clues in their answers.

Interview with Manja Marz

How do you like EGC 2014 Sibiu up to now?

Nice weather, good organized, many professionals.
Meeting the people from all over the world is fantastic and I am every year looking so much forward to see our big family again.
Wonderful.

Did you play with Kim as a pair before? What can you tell me about your styles?

No, youngsam and me didn’t play before. but we trained every night and wished to play in the finals Vanessa and Lukas. Luckily this indeed happened. People say i have an agressive style. Youngsam knows my style and played in a way, that it was always easy for me to find the next move.
Thank you -- Youngsam :D

I know you will be polite and say that all games were hard but please tell me what game was the hardest to win?

The very first game in the preliminaries was very hard. I was endless
nervous and we lost on the board but finally won on time.
Our opponents were very strong and once again the kyu player played like a dan player with a professional at her side.
Pairgo is wonderful.

Will you join the team Germany in the final against Czechia Power on Tuesday? (Manja is a strong football player too)

I hope i can, but it depends on babysitter :D

I admire a lot the people that come to Go tournaments with their children.
How do you manage to be this strong in Go, have an extremely demanding job and have a family life?

Recently more and more go players bring there family and kids to go
congresses. I like this development very much.
Unfortunately i only rised in go for 4 years, then i got the first kid
and since then i am not improving anymore. Simply no time.

Combining job, hobby and family has been very challenging. however, now i found my way and i am happy to share my time with the kids.

Kim YoungSam Interview

What do you think about EGC 2014 in Sibiu.

Everything was fine, good hotel, good place, good city. I could meet many of my friends here and yeah, that’s it.

Tong Yulin said that the toughest game for him in the main tournament was against you.

Well, this game was difficult, it was close like 8-9 points on the board behind for me, I had white, but I think that even if it was close I had no chance, so I overplay and he fought back and I lose.

Let’s talk about the Pair Championship which you won along Manja Marx. Did you enjoy playing Manja?

Yes, a lot, we trained every night.

Really?

We trained against Benjamin, many people trained with us, so I really need to thank them and Haiashi sensei also, when I asked him to play he always said yes, yes, yes

Did you expect to win?

No, we wanted to, but we didn’t expect, we just wanted to have fun

What do you think about the european players?

They are getting stronger.

How long until players like Ilya Shikshin, Ali Jabarin or Lisy Pavol or can play on equal terms against you or players like Ho Chi_Min or Fan Hui

I think they are equal but of course we have more experience.
I think if they continue to play and train in one year they will beat us.

Will u go to EGC2015 in Liberec?

Of course, I need my revenge.

The European Go Congress 2014 is over. The last game to finish about 10 minutes ago was between Lothar Spiegel and Jan Simara and the austrian won. I took the results to T**i Ghioc and Viorel Arsinoaia, the guys that did their magic for 2 weeks and now I hit refresh on the results page to see where my friends are placed after 10 rounds. The Weekend Tournament was won by Tong Yulin from China, the Tsume Go contest by Alexandru Pitrop from Romania, the Veterans Tournament by Sorin Sora from Romania, the Children Competition by Xinyu Liu from China for children under 12 and Alexandru Pitrop from Romania for children under 16, the 13x13 tournament by Andrej Arsentjev, the Lightning Tournament by Tong Yulin, the Rapid Torunament by Wang Chen from China, the Main Open Tournament by Tong Yulin and the title of European Champion was won by Fan Hui from France. Boring statistics that hide the truth about the awesome 2 weeks several hundred people spent together. Many of the participants are already travelling towards their homes and the hotel halls are not the same. There is no more children laughter, no more people sleeping on the sofas or on the carpets, no more plans being made on where to spend the evening.
There is a lot to be written about these two weeks from my point of view starting with the people that I've met or that I've gotten to know so much better, about the great way in which we, in the organizing team, worked together about the feelings that I had when I would enter the playing halls and hundreds of people were deep immersed in their complicated game.

The organizing team was formed of: Marius Ion, Sorin Padurariu, Catalin Taranu, T**i Ghioc, Valeria Costea, Bogdan Enache, Alex Nae, Rares Ghioc, George Ginguta, Alice Trifu, Laura Avram, George Chirila, Alex Acsinte, Paul Stanciu, Viorel Arsinoaia, Mihai Serban, Alexandru Caraivan, Viorel Ichim, Andreea Pirvu, Ilie Sebastian, Dan Groza, Iulian Militaru, Adelina Sora, Ruxandra Atanasiu, Ana-Maria Szilaghi, Adina Piloiu, Alexandra Pintea, Mirel Florescu and Iulian Dragomir. I copied the list in exactly the same order these names were listed along with the telephone numbers so in no way this reflects the importance of any of us here on the outcome of the event. There were some people that, in my opinion, were indispensable to our success. The referee team leaded by T**i Ghioc with Viorel Arsinoaia and Dan Groza as his right hands was oustanding. At one point one of us said that now he understands how important is to work with people you get along with and that he is thinking to quit his job in order to find some nicer people in a new place of work. That is quite a compliment if you ask me. I would add to this list the team of EuroGoTV formed of Harry Weerheijm and Judith van Dam. In the end none of us were perfect but we pulled it off quite nicely. Ok, maybe the girls were perfect.

The city of Sibiu and Hotel Ramada were great hosts aswell. There were some missteps along the way but in the end I couldn’t imagine a better city and a nicer hotel for this event. There were live concerts, wild parties, great landmarks to visit and above all, a lot of Go. Go against old friends or new friends, against unknown persons, against professional players, against stronger or weaker players, in the hotel halls, in front of a beer, in hotel rooms or in official competitions. Go was everywhere.

In the days to come I will try to contact professional players and players that attended and see if it was for them as great as I think it was.

I hope that I will attend EGC 2015 in Liberec and can’t wait to meet my new czech friends.

The closing ceremony will begin soon so I have to close this here but the story is not over. I will continue to post pictures, movies or stories as soon as I get them or remember them.

Interview with Fan Hui:
R. Congratulations for winning the title 2 times in a row!
Fan Hui Thank you!
R. What do you think about this tournament?
Fan Hui Everything was fine, hotel, great organization, city.
How many more times do you want to be the European Champion?
Fan Hui I will come back every year and try to win as many as possible but it becomes harder with the younger guys coming. We still have more experience.
R. Did the presence of Tong Yulin 4p affected the european competition?
Fan Hui I don't think so, it was nice to see his level.
From next year the system will change and the european players will play among them for the european title.
R. Thank you for the interview and I'm very happy for you happiness :)
Fan Hui I'm happy too.

09/08/2014

Fan Hui remains the European Champion for at least another year! Alexander Dinerstein resigned just a few seconds ago.

09/08/2014

Tong Yulin already won his game so he won the Open Tournament with 10 straight wins. I took a small interview from him:
How did you like the European Go Congress?
I loved it. Everything was good here but quite different from the pro tournaments in China.
What was the hardest game in this tournament?
Hmm. The hardest for me was against Kim Young-Sam from Korea.
Will you come to European Go Congress in the future?
I would love to come but of course it is not my decision, the chinese federation has the final saying.
What do you think about the strenght of the european players?
Well, I found them much stronger than I expected and unfortunately I didn't get to play against everybody that I wanted to from Europe.

09/08/2014

Exactly 30 minutes until the start of the last round of this great tournament, Players started to arrive and check the billboards for their opponents but I didn't see yet neither Fan Hui or the other finalist Alexander Dinerstein. Log on to KGS to watch live this final. We will also relay the game for the third place between Ilya Shikshin and Ali Jabarin.
Later I will try to make a few short interviews with the winner, some pro players and find out how they liked it here.

08/08/2014

Alexander Dinerstein joins Fan Hui in the final. What an amazing comeback for the russian who has now a change to win the title for the 8th time. It's been 5 years since he was last in a final which he won against Catalin Taranu from Romania. Still, I think Fan Hui starts as favourite but several high dan players agreed that Alexander Dinerstein go style at this edition of EGC changed for the better.

08/08/2014

Fan Hui is the first finalist! Ali Jabarin resigned a few moments ago.
