Ran-ai is the culmination of four to five years of work, a kata that includes the main techniques of the first two series. It is a beautiful sequence in which symmetry and asymmetry are balanced. The initiative of the attack is shifted several times from one side to the other - the uchidachi first gains lost territory, only to lose it again. Checks, blocks, strikes, lunges, escapes and other strikes follow each other with such speed and intensity that they always impress beginners.
Ran-ai (harmony in chaos) is the most important kata of Shinto Muso Ryu. As a working tool par excellence, it requires all the qualities required at this stage: good physical condition, good kiai (shidachi has 10 to 14 opportunities for kiai), fast, fluid and very precise technique. It is the speed with which the techniques follow each other that requires decisiveness and reflexes that come from the motor centers rather than from memory.
Ran-ai is a kata that appears in all demonstrations. It is a mandatory part of the program for all exams from the level of shodan (1st dan) and above.
