🚨 SPAIN ISSUES OFFICIAL WARNING AS DANA THREATENS HEAVY RAIN AND POSSIBLE FLOODING ALONG MEDITERRANEAN COAST THIS WEEKEND

Thursday 15 October 2026 — Weather Update
Spain's Civil Protection authorities have issued an official advance warning as a developing weather system threatens to bring heavy rain, thunderstorms and a sharp drop in temperatures to parts of the Mediterranean coast this weekend.
The warning follows the latest forecast from Spain's national weather agency, AEMET, which says a weather phenomenon known as a DANA could develop over the Iberian Peninsula.
The greatest concern is for Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October, when some coastal areas could experience intense and persistent rainfall.
Residents in Alicante, Murcia, Almería and other Mediterranean regions are being advised to follow weather updates closely.
🌪️ WHAT EXACTLY IS A DANA?
Many people living in Spain will have heard the term DANA, particularly following previous devastating floods.
But what does it actually mean?
DANA stands for Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos, which translates roughly as an isolated depression at high altitude.
Despite sometimes being described as a storm, DANA is not the name of a storm or hurricane.
It is a weather phenomenon that develops when a mass of cold air high in the atmosphere becomes separated from the main jet stream.
When this colder air interacts with warm, moisture-rich air rising from the Mediterranean, the atmosphere can become extremely unstable.
Under the right conditions, this can produce powerful thunderstorms, intense downpours, hail and localised flooding.
However, not every DANA produces severe weather. Some pass with relatively little disruption.
🌍 WHERE IS THIS DANA COMING FROM?
According to AEMET, the developing weather system is associated with a tongue of colder air extending southwards from higher latitudes towards the Iberian Peninsula.
As this upper-level disturbance develops, a pocket of cold air could become isolated over or near northern Spain.
Meanwhile, high pressure around the British Isles and the North Sea will help direct colder air towards the peninsula.
At lower levels, easterly winds are expected to draw humid air inland from the Mediterranean Sea.
It is this combination of cold air above and moist Mediterranean air below that could generate heavy rainfall.
Importantly, the system is not simply a storm travelling across the Mediterranean towards Spain. The DANA develops high in the atmosphere, while the Mediterranean provides much of the moisture needed for rainfall.
🌧️ WHEN WILL THE RAIN ARRIVE?
Friday 16 October
Much of the country will still experience relatively settled conditions, although temperatures are expected to begin changing.
Saturday 17 October
Weather conditions are forecast to deteriorate as showers and thunderstorms develop.
Rainfall could become heavier during the afternoon and evening, particularly around Mediterranean coastal areas and the Balearic Islands.
Sunday 18 October
Sunday currently presents the greatest concern.
AEMET says some Mediterranean coastal and nearby inland areas could experience prolonged and potentially intense rainfall.
The exact locations of the heaviest downpours remain uncertain.
🌊 WHICH AREAS COULD BE AFFECTED?
Costa Blanca — Alicante
Alicante and other parts of the Valencian Community are among the regions being watched closely for possible heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
Costa Cálida — Murcia
Murcia's coastal and inland areas could experience showers, thunderstorms and a noticeable temperature drop.
Almería and eastern Andalucía
Parts of eastern Andalucía could also experience unsettled conditions, although the extent of the weekend rainfall remains uncertain.
Valencia, Castellón, Tarragona and Catalonia
Other Mediterranean coastal areas may also be affected, depending on how the system develops.
Balearic Islands
The Balearics are specifically highlighted in the official advance warning.
⚠️ IS THERE A RISK OF FLOODING?
Yes, localised flooding is possible if particularly intense rainfall develops, especially in areas with poor drainage, dry riverbeds and low-lying roads.
However, it is important not to confuse the advance warning with a confirmed major flood emergency.
AEMET has emphasised that there is still considerable uncertainty about the DANA's eventual position and where the heaviest rainfall will fall.
The situation could change significantly as the weekend approaches.
🚗 WHAT SHOULD RESIDENTS DO?
Civil Protection is advising people to remain alert to updated forecasts and take sensible precautions.
Avoid driving through flooded roads, even when the water appears shallow.
Keep away from dry riverbeds, drainage channels and flood-prone underpasses during intense rainfall.
Drivers should allow additional journey time if thunderstorms develop, while homeowners in vulnerable locations should check drainage areas and outdoor belongings.
Most importantly, follow official AEMET warnings and any emergency instructions issued by local authorities.
🌡️ TEMPERATURES ALSO SET TO FALL
After an unusually warm spell for October, much of Spain is expected to experience a noticeable drop in temperatures.
The arrival of colder air will bring more typical autumn conditions, with the possibility of a particularly sharp change in some areas.
🔴 LATEST POSITION — THURSDAY 15 OCTOBER
Spain's Civil Protection authorities have issued an official advance warning for potentially intense rainfall from Saturday.
However, this does not mean every Mediterranean coastal municipality is currently under an orange or red weather alert.
The exact areas affected, rainfall totals and severity will become clearer as updated forecasts are issued.
CNS will continue following the developing situation, particularly across Alicante, Murcia, Almería and the Costa del Sol.
