Leg Spin Bowling Masterclass | Developing the Foundations of Leg Spin 🏏

In this focused 1-to-1 bowling session, I worked with a young and promising cricketer from England who was struggling to generate consistent spin on the ball.

Rather than immediately focusing on speed, variations, or simply bowling more deliveries, we went back to the foundations of leg-spin bowling and broke the action down into smaller, more manageable components.

The objective was simple:

Understand the movement. Build the correct positions. Then allow the ball to spin.

🏏 Understanding the Palm Position

One of the first areas we addressed was the position of the palm at the beginning of the bowling action.

For a young leg-spinner, the relationship between the hand, palm, wrist, and ball can significantly influence the ability to generate revolutions. We worked on creating a more consistent starting position and developing awareness of where the palm should be directed as the delivery develops.

The player was encouraged to understand the position rather than simply copy a movement.

Developing Wrist Movement

We then isolated the wrist action.

The focus was on understanding how the wrist moves through the delivery and how that movement contributes to creating rotation on the ball.

Instead of trying to force the spin, we worked on allowing the wrist to move naturally and consistently through the release.

The goal was to create revolutions with control, rather than simply trying to bowl harder.

Palm Orientation Towards the Batter

A major coaching cue throughout the session was:

“Keep the palm straight towards the batsman.”

POWER HITTING | EXPANDING THE SCORING RANGE 🏏💥

Another high-performance power-hitting session focused on one key objective: learning to access more scoring areas without relying on straight hitting.

Building on the learning from our previous power-hitting sessions, we deliberately restricted straight shots and challenged the players to target three specific areas:

🎯 Square Leg
🎯 Mid-Wicket
🎯 Extra Cover

The focus was on recognising good-length deliveries and learning how to convert them into scoring opportunities square of the wicket.

Rather than simply asking players to “hit harder”, the session challenged them to explore:

• Shot selection
• Bat swing and bat speed
• Body positioning
• Weight transfer
• Creating space
• Accessing different scoring angles
• Maintaining intent through the shot
• Expanding their natural hitting range

The restriction on straight hitting created a valuable challenge. Players had to think differently, adapt their movement, and find ways to generate power into areas they may not naturally target.

That’s where high-performance practice becomes valuable.

Constraints create awareness. Awareness creates adaptation. Adaptation expands performance.

The session went extremely well, and it was great to see the players enjoying the process of exploring the full range of their stroke play while competing with themselves to find better and more efficient ways to score.

We are not just training players to hit the ball harder.

We are training them to recognise opportunities, create scoring options, and access the entire field with intent.

Show It. Believe It. Play It. 🏏✨

One of the biggest differences between coaching adults and coaching young players is how they learn.

Experienced players usually understand what a sweep shot is, they’re looking to refine it. But for a young cricketer, the first step is often seeing the skill performed with confidence.

During this 1-to-1 session with a teenage player, I continued our Sweep Shot Mastery theme by demonstrating the shot before asking him to play it. I showed him how to get into position, transfer weight, and execute the sweep against a ball delivered at good pace.

Throughout the session, I repeatedly emphasized three key fundamentals:

🏏 Keep the front leg bent to stay balanced and get underneath the ball.
👀 Keep your eyes on the point of impact to improve timing and make cleaner contact.
🎯 Keep your head still throughout the shot, allowing the body to stay stable and the bat to swing on the correct path.

These simple fundamentals make a huge difference. They improve balance, increase control, and help players execute the sweep shot with greater confidence and consistency.

The moment that stood out most was seeing the player’s reaction after watching the live demonstration. He was amazed that a ball travelling at good pace could still be swept with control. In that moment, the shot no longer looked difficult, it looked achievable.

That’s why I believe great coaching is more than giving instructions. It’s about demonstrating the skill, building understanding, and giving players the confidence to perform it themselves.

Every session is an opportunity to develop not only better technique but also better decision-making, confidence, and game awareness.

Master the Sweep. Dominate the Spinner. 🏏🔥

Playing spin is about much more than surviving, it’s about taking control of the game.

Today’s high-performance coaching session focused on developing different sweep shot techniques, helping players understand not only how to execute the shot, but why each movement matters.

We worked on:
✅ Conventional Sweep
✅ Paddle Sweep
✅ Shot Selection
✅ Footwork & Balance
✅ Head Position
✅ Bat Path
✅ Reading the Length
✅ Correcting Individual Technical Errors

Every player has different strengths and challenges. Throughout the session, I worked closely with each athlete to identify areas for improvement, provide individual technical corrections, and build confidence against spin bowling.

High-performance coaching isn’t about feeding hundreds of balls in the nets. It’s about creating better movement, better decision-making, and better ex*****on under pressure.

When players understand the science behind their movements, improvement becomes faster, more consistent, and more transferable to match situations.

I’ve watched good players get out to the same ball, session after session, because they were playing the sweep on instinct rather than intent. So in this session, we broke it all down - from the ground up.

We covered all 3 variations:
🏏 Traditional Sweep - controlled, low risk, your go-to against quality spin
💪 Full Arm Extension Sweep - when the ball is fuller and you want power through the line
🔥 Slog Sweep - high risk, high reward, but only if you pick the right ball

And the fundamentals that make every single one of them work:

✅ Stable base before anything else - front knee down, weight balanced
✅ Head position stays still throughout the shot
✅ Full arm extension when the ball demands it
✅ Area selection - fine leg, square leg, or mid-wicket. Know it before you swing
✅ Eyes on the ball at contact. Every. Single. Time.

The slog sweep is where most players go wrong. They play it to the wrong delivery, they look up too early, and they wonder why they keep getting caught. The shot isn’t the problem. The decision-making is.

If there’s one thing I’d want every batter to take from this session - it’s this: the sweep shot isn’t just a scoring option. Against quality spin, it’s a survival tool. Get it right and it completely changes how a bowler plans to attack you.
