Some sad news! 📉 A major new international review paper published in Nature Reviews Biodiversity, featuring BTO authors, finds that 51% of the world’s migratory bird species are declining. ⬇️

⚠️ Numbers are falling across every migratory flyway, including the Eurasian-African one used by much-loved species such as Swallow, Swift and Cuckoo for their journeys between their UK breeding grounds and Africa.

Why is this happening? 🔍
Habitat loss, climate change (including extreme weather), invasive species, collisions with buildings and infrastructure, disease, and pesticides are all contributing to the challenges faced by these global travellers.

How do we stop this? 🤔
Reversing the trends will require conservation strategies that address the threats birds face across their entire migratory life cycles and international flyways, rather than in isolation.

However, local conservation strategies still play a huge role in ensuring that wildlife has space to flourish. In the UK, previous BTO research has shown how managed and protected landscapes including farmland, woodland and urban green spaces are all vital for supporting migratory species. 🌳🐦
