When something feels outside your control, where *do* you still have agency?

Take a breath. Ask the question. Ask for help. Speak up. Send the email. Take the next small step.

This week’s Teachable Moment is about something I’ve been practising behind the scenes at Emerge HQ — and something I see all the time with brilliant professionals who feel blocked by English:

Part 2/4: analysing my own 90-second introduction 🎙️

Good communication isn’t just about sounding confident.

It’s about remembering there are people on the other end of it.

Who am I speaking to?
What do they actually need to know?
How can I make this relevant to this room?

That’s why I’d choose responsive, human communication over a perfectly memorised script every time.

And then: signposting.

Signposting language helps your audience follow you — but it also helps you stay on track, answer the actual question and know when to stop.

Because being concise is a form of respect.

If everyone gets only 90 seconds each, nobody asked for your life story. 😅

Say what matters. Make it relevant. Trust that it’s enough. Then give the floor to someone else.

I wouldn’t ask you to do something I’m not willing to do myself.

This morning, I introduced myself and Emerge to a room of about 20 women at a workshop.

I went last. No script. No rehearsal. Just me, speaking.

And I recorded it. 👀

Because one of the things I regularly ask my students to do is record themselves speaking, listen back and notice what’s actually happening — not to criticise themselves, but to become more aware of how they communicate.

So I decided to practise what I preach.

Over the next few days, I’m taking you through my own recording exactly as I might with a student: pausing, analysing and noticing the choices that made it land: structure, intonation, emphasis, pauses, filler words and presence.

I’ve learnt to communicate well now, but I didn’t always speak like this on camera.

This isn’t something you either have or you don’t. It’s something you practise.

And after this intro today, I was invited to give a future workshop to the community. 🥹

Turns out how you communicate really does matter.
