WITHOUT APRIL ‘74 THE TRACK WOULD BE EMPTY
Without the Carnation Revolution of April 1974, our track wouldn’t just be quiet, it would be empty. Every time we lace up our skates, we are standing on a foundation of rights that were once denied.
We skate because of the doors that were kicked open 52 years ago. Here are some of them:
Association: The right to organize our own league, skater-owned and skater-run. The right to assemble and speak freely.
Financial Independence: The right to own our gear and control our own futures.
Bodily Autonomy: The right to use our bodies for strength, for contact, and for ourselves, rejecting the “domestic ideal” of the past.
Q***r Liberation: The right to exist, to love, and to build a community where every identity is celebrated, not hidden.
We benefit from all that was conquered on April 25 1974. We don’t just play a sport, we exercise a freedom that was hard-won and must still be fiercely protected.
Without April ’74, there is no us.
