Patient safety is not just about preventing harm, it’s about ensuring every patient receives appropriate, responsible and patient-centred care throughout their healthcare journey.

For chiropractors, patient safety begins before treatment takes place.

It means taking a thorough history, performing an appropriate clinical examination, establishing a working diagnosis, obtaining informed consent and developing a management plan based on the individual patient.

It also means recognising when chiropractic care may not be appropriate and when further investigation, referral or co-management with another healthcare professional is needed.

As primary-contact healthcare practitioners, chiropractors have an important responsibility to assess, diagnose, manage and refer appropriately, always placing the needs and safety of the patient at the centre of clinical decision-making.

This World Patient Safety Day, CASA reaffirms its commitment to promoting safe, ethical and evidence-informed chiropractic care in South Africa.
