There's been a lot of buzz around Portugal opening to vaccinated US travelers as of June 15. Last September would have been my 8th season living in Portugal for 3 months a year and I am itching to get back! Back to the food, the city, the beaches and most of all my family & friends.

Watching this trend closely to see how company policies evolve to enable digital nomads like myself to truly work from anywhere while reducing liability risk.

"We found that the number of Americans describing themselves as digital nomads rose from 7.3 million in 2019 to 10.9 million in 2020 — an increase of 49%. And the composition of this cohort shifted. In previous years, the ranks of digital nomads were dominated by independent workers: freelancers, independent contractors, and the self-employed. But the 2020 nomad surge was driven by people with traditional jobs. Untethered from their offices, many employees decided to take to the road. In fact, the number of digital nomads with traditional jobs rose from 3.2 million in 2019 to 6.3 million in 2020 — a 96% increase. Traditional job holders now make up a majority of those pursuing this nontraditional work lifestyle."

Two weeks ago I found myself sitting at my desk after a long day of coaching, feeling stressed out & overwhelmed. I’d come off leading an AMAZING & jumped right into launching two new leadership coaching groups & hosting two sets of friends visiting back to back. I’d taken that dusty old superwoman cape out of the closet & put it back on...thinking I could do ALL THE THINGS nonstop. And then my body reminded me that’s not the way we do things anymore.
Luckily my early warning alarms went off:
🚨 Heart & mind racing
🚨 Worried thoughts
🚨 “Not enough” thoughts
🚨 Using “I’m too busy” language

I’ve been here before, that’s no secret. But what’s worth celebrating is that now when I “get hooked” I sense it much sooner & I have the tools to get back in alignment much faster.
One of my favorite tools is my Habit Tracker page in my journal. I identify the daily habits that calm my nervous system & bring me back into flow vs those that stress me out. Then I track that I’m doing the former & not doing the latter. Guess who wasn’t tracking any of it over the last month? That’s right. You have to use the tools for them to work ;)
I’ve learned that what calms my nervous system is:
> daily mediation
> exercise
> time in nature
> sleep (more naps!!)
> less alcohol & social media
So I took a 10 day “detox” from social media & drinking & started tracking my daily meditations, workouts & sleep. Within 3 days I felt SO MUCH BETTER. I could literally feel my nervous system relaxing & things feeling like less of a big deal.
We all forget what we need sometimes. We get hooked by the “never enough” “more more more” energy & think that we need to push harder than we do. I’ve come to accept that I will get hooked. And I’m grateful that I have developed awareness to catch myself when I’m in the orange zone before I get to red, and I know what I need to do to recover back to the green quickly.
Developing this self awareness & recovery techniques is one of my favorite things to do with clients. Having a system you trust to bring you back to calm, clear & energized is a superpower in itself! 💥

This week brought so many amazing people from past chapters of my life unexpectedly to Sayulita at once. This one is particularly special not only because I got to work with her & so many other amazing humans when I consulted & coached my first year as a working digital nomad, but because she introduced me to the most impactful volunteer experience of my life.
Because of Talya, Eric & I got to spend the summer of 2016 in Jerusalem through a program called Middle Eastern Entrepeneurs of Tomorrow (MEET) teaching computer programming & entrepreneurship to a group of very special high schoolers. Very special because they were a mix of Israeli & Palestinian kids, some of the smartest in the country, chosen to spend 3 summers living & learning together in hopes of creating empathy & meaningful relationships between potential future leaders.
The experience was so rich I feel like I could write a book about it. I just barely scratched the surface of the surface in understanding the conflict or the reality these kids face daily. But it touched me to a depth I didn’t realize existed & blew my mind open with new perspective.
Volunteering is one of the most profound ways to connect with a foreign culture & this was a truly special volunteer job.
I will always be grateful to you for opening that door for us. It was so so fun to see you this week, meet Yasmín & reconnect. Hope our path cross again soon my friend ❤️ig Jesse Rishin Shem , anyone else I’m missing! - Sending 🧡

I love the crackle of excitement before the first Surf Session of our ✨SURF YOUR SOUL✨ retreat. 🏄🏽‍♀️The anticipation of finding the edge of your comfort zone & challenging yourself to GO FOR IT!
When Risa & I dreamt up our concept for a women’s retreat,
combining learning to surf with recharging your battery & reconnecting with self- we didn’t realize what an amazing primer the morning Surf Sessions would be for the afternoon Soul Sessions.
Surfing is innately a mindfulness practice. There is no room to get stuck in your head, you are forced to stay present, in the moment, & connected to your body. It’s a beautiful way to connect with nature, joy & strength & it creates a perfect opening to step into a more introspective space in the afternoon Soul Sessions.
What a seriously amazing gift to get to do this work!✨

What a difference a year makes. We were fully sold out for our Surf Your Soul retreat for May 2020, and then the pandemic hit in March. Remember when we thought things would be only shut down a few weeks? Then a month? Then another month? We had no idea when things would open up again & we could host the way we truly want, creating an experience of deep connection, with self, with nature 🌴🌊, with other amazing women.
And here we are. Ready to kickoff our 3rd year of SURF YOUR SOUL. Surf lessons, group coaching, yoga, tacos, love & connection.
I’m feeling all the feels of gratitude today for being able to do this again. For the gift of creating a space for 7 amazing women who I KNOW are needing this break more than ever right now. ✨

A few years ago, I embarked on a quest to understand how other digital nomads came to design their location-independent lives and to learn what they had in common.

One common thread I heard over and over was that location independence was achieved by receiving passive income from home rentals. Rental income is a great way to diversify your income stream or spend less of your savings during a sabbatical or work downturn.

Three years ago Risa and I decided to combine forces and create a space for women to step away from their busy daily lives, reconnect with themselves, with nature, and with their strength & joy!
