PFM Coaching

PFM Coaching Running coach specialising in helping people succeed at first attempts at Marathons, Ultras & beyond!

My passion for running has led me to continually push to see what I can achieve, I tend to be drawn to events that I think are beyond me rather than trying to get better at a given distance. This has seen me progress from a non runner with no interest in sports six years ago to the point where I have completed multiple 100 mile races, a 200 mile ultra, a 6 stage 235 mile ultra marathon and set a F

astest Known Time for the Limestone Way. I have also qualified as a LiRF (run leader), CiRF (running coach) and UESCA certified Ultra running Coach and hold a BSc (Hons) in Sport, Fitness and Coaching allowing me to provide coaching informed by science and shaped by experience! If you are just starting to run I can help you to bypass all the confusing and contradictory information saving you time and pain and provide you with a focused, science based training plan that will give you strong foundations to take your running in whichever direction you choose to go. For the more experienced I can help you focus your training to achieve your goals whether that be to get faster at a given distance or run a distance for the first time. I have personal experience of a wide range of distances and terrains so can help prepare you for your event from both a training and logistical viewpoint. My Qualifications

Have a read about this great initiative. PFM Coaching were thrilled to join the many other race organisers, coaches etc offering their services to this scheme. Ultra running should be for as many people as possible and this is a great way to help make that a reality.

The new scheme aims to improve access to ultrarunning by covering the costs for those less able to afford it

Recent circumstances have caused me to revisit my running goals so while I was at it I decided to write a short blog post about goals. If you have two minutes to fill have a read, it may just give you some direction.

Thoughts on different types of running goals

With the Dragon 100 approaching it was out for a recce of part of the route today with one of my coached athletes Angharad. The goal was to gain some familiarisation of the route at an effort similar to race day so some nice easy effort miles. There were a few diversions for essential nutrition stops (can't not have ice cream in the sun on a coastal run).

The year I completed the Dragon the route was slightly different so it was great to get to take in some of the views of this section myself. Those running it are in for a treat and if you are thinking of running it in the future why not sign up for my emails at https://sendfox.com/pfmcoachingteam as I have something exciting lined up for this event in 2024 and email subscribers will be the first to know.

A couple of photos walking around Ponta Delgada before/, after the Azores 110k. Some lovely architecture and I'd definitely like to come back and explore some more.

Ultra X Azores 110k day 2. Another amazing day, maybe a little less scenic but much more runnable and a great test to see if I could push myself a little.

A huge thanks to everyone involved in the planning, organisation and to all the volunteers, everyone was on the ball, super friendly and amazingly encouraging. All awesome👏👏👏👏.

A couple of days of lugging sleepers and shoveling around 10 tonne of stone is rather dubious prep for a 2 day 110k in the Azores but on the plus side I should (🤞) have a hot tub installed when I get back.

I know that time is something that many of us struggle to find enough of. For this reason I try to make my coaching service as streamlined and efficient as possible so that my athletes can get the information they need quickly and easily.

Up until now I have been conscious that finding a mutually convenient time for my athletes and potential clients to speak to me directly rather than through messenger or email has been a bit long winded with messages going back and forth. I am pleased to say that this has now been simplified.

For those who wish to have a free, no obligation consultation with myself this can now be booked directly from my website at https://www.pfmcoaching.co.uk/book-a-free-consultation where you can select a date and time and will then be sent a link for a Google Meets video call.

For my athletes there is now a link on the message board within the coaching platform where you can book a Google Meets video call to discuss any issues of concern with no additional charge.

Give me rain every day of the week, I find running in the rain is when it's most relaxing. Consistency still lacking but glimmers of finally being able to complete some decent workouts. It's important to train in all conditions so you are ready for them on race day, I just happen to like the bad weather. Some tips for running in the rain:

1. The rain washes the sweat into your eyes and it burns. Wear a buff so you can wipe it away or a cap or headband.

2. You will still get wet wearing a waterproof jacket, but it's still worth wearing as it will help stop you from getting cold.

3. You may need to put vaseline or talc on your feet (and elsewhere) to stop chaffing when wet. You can get various specialist products, just test them out to see what works for you.

When you are training for big ultras practicing your hiking is a vital part of training. This session included hiking some good elevation and then an easy paced run back down. Great strength training and specific to the tactics that will be employed on race day.
