From injury setbacks to the top of the podium…what a day! 🇵🇹🏃♂️
I had an absolute blast participating in the 2nd Annual Queen Leonor Half Marathon, 10K & 5K Walk in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal. With over 1,600 runners from 29 different countries, the energy was incredible.
I chose the 10K and, to be honest, I haven’t been able to train properly due to an injury. I started conservatively in the middle of the pack, unsure of how my body would respond. But sometimes experience, patience, and grit can take you a long way. By the finish line, I had worked my way through the field to win the 60–65 age group and finish 37th overall.
I couldn’t help but reflect on how much things have changed. Not too long ago, running in Portugal wasn’t very popular. I remember heading out for runs through town and getting plenty of curious looks… “Who’s this old guy in Lycra shorts running through the center of town?” 😂
A huge congratulations to my cousin, Marco Martins, who absolutely crushed the Half Marathon with a blazing 1:17 finish on a challenging, hot, and humid course—good enough for 4th overall and 1st place in the 45–50 age group. What an impressive performance!
Running continues to teach us that progress isn’t always perfect. Adapt, stay consistent, trust the process, and never underestimate what years of dedication can accomplish.
