The Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) defines quality coaching as a combination of technical expertise, pedagogical skill, and the ability to foster long-term player development through engaging, safe, and modern methods. As a leading global organization for tennis teaching professionals, the PTR emphasizes that high-quality coaches are not just instructors, but educators who adapt to the needs of modern tennis.

Here is a breakdown of the quality of coaching in tennis as discussed by the PTR:

Core Components of Quality Coaching

Technique and Biomechanics: Coaches are trained in sound, standardized tennis techniques, ensuring they can teach proper mechanics for all strokes.

Developmental Focus: Quality coaching goes beyond managing drills; it involves teaching players why a movement is incorrect and providing, for example, "3 Chins" (Spanish system) or other, to improve skills.

Adaptability and Customization: Superior coaches adapt their teaching style to the individual player's learning curve, rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach.

Engagement and Fun: Effective coaches ensure that, particularly for youth, lessons are enjoyable to maximize learning and engagement.

The PTR Certification Standard

PTR workshops are designed to ensure coaches meet high standards in:

Teaching/Coaching Assessment: Evaluates ability to organize, communicate, and teach effectively on-court.

Skills/Playing Assessment: Requires coaches to demonstrate proper strokes and effective, high-quality ball feeding.

Methodology and Safety: Covers age-appropriate and stage-appropriate techniques for all levels.

Modernizing Coaching Quality

The PTR is actively raising the bar for coaching quality through several initiatives:

AI Integration: The PTR is partnering with Trek AI to provide coaches with tools for personalized,, data-driven training plans, allowing for more efficient and effective, customized, lessons.

Continuous Professional Development: The PTR stresses that coaches must stay current with advancements in sports psychology, biomechanics, and training methods

Scam Awareness ⛔️ Beware of, "pay-to-work" schemes, where a "tennis group of clowns" requires you to pay for a weekend certification course from a "company" they also own and manage. A reputable certification should be accredited by national bodies like the ITF (International Tennis Federation), the USTA (United States Tennis Association) or similar national associations, non-profit organizations...Hope it makes sense 🤔

*Career Overview
Touring Player: Wegner played on the international tennis circuit from 1963 to 1967, competing with legends such as Roy Emerson and Manolo Santana.

*Coaching Methodology
After a hamstring injury ended his tour career, he began developing MTM in 1968, a system that emphasizes an open stance, topspin, and natural movement, as opposed to the then-conventional closed stance and early preparation.

*Notable Students & Influence
He coached a young Gustavo Kuerten (former world No. 1) in Brazil and influenced the coaching style of Richard Williams, father of Venus and Serena Williams, through his televised tips. He also briefly coached Björn Borg in 1990.

*Media & Publications
Wegner was a Spanish-language tennis commentator for ESPN International and Panamerican Sports Network, broadcasting his "Play Like The Pros" tips to a global audience. He has authored several books, including "Tennis in Two Hours", and produced numerous instructional DVDs.

*Organizations
He founded the Modern Tennis Methodology Coaches Association (MTMCA) which certifies coaches in his system worldwide 🌍🌎🌏

Some coaching tips sound right… but actually ruin your shot. 🚫🎾

“Push on your legs.”

“Jump into the ball.”

“Use your hips.”

These cues are heard everywhere — and they often do more harm than good. ❌

Tennis movement is natural and sequential. When your hand moves first, the arm follows. When the arm follows, the shoulder turns. When everything turns together, the hips naturally come last. That’s how the kinetic chain is supposed to work.

Forcing the hips first breaks the sequence. Your hand ends up late, your contact point is off, and the shot loses both control and efficiency.

Power doesn’t come from forcing body parts — it comes from letting the chain flow in the right order.

👉 What’s the worst tennis advice you’ve ever been given?
