King Of France 2026 Day 3 Race 2 - it was all going to plan, till it wasn't!

Saturday started of almost entirely to plan. Lining up second place on the grid behind Team Pheonix, which we thought would mean they would push on and Paul and Liam could tuck in behind and suss out the revised track. Team Pheonix however had other ideas and let Paul go off the start. Well at least they had clean air I guess!

Lap 1 and 2 were no issue but lap 3 they picked up a puncture. Not really an issue, they were carrying a spare, a gun and jack. However, the jack needs an attachment to lift the car and the attachment was still on the front seat of the van! 🙈🤦‍♂️ Liam managed to improvise and got the wheel changed, but they had lost a shed full of time. Now was go time. With half an hour in hand from Day 1 over Team Synchro, they had to get back in touch without necessarily having to finish in front of them.

Lap 4, 5 & 6 they gained back time, opting to skip a refuel and trust the capacity of the Mav R Fuel tank.

Lap 7 however, everything went just a bit sideways! So sideways in fact they ended up in the greenery on the outside of a corner with a broken steering rack!
Under Ultra4 Rules, you can't give any outside assistance, so Liam had to hike the 1km back to pits to get a trolley jack, steering Rack and tools necessary to switch out the rack. After a couple of hikes back to get more kit, he managed to get it changed and they completed lap 7. Deciding there wasn't anything to do to re-gain the lead, as Team Synchro had already finished, they decided to call it.

One beat up driver (Remember Paul does everything in that car with his hands & arms) and one very tired co-driver had still done enough to finish 3rd in the UTV Class and 6th overall. Not the result Paul was hunting for, but a result all the same.

De-brief tomorrow to learn and move forward into King of Britain. Good news is, the new XRC showed some good potential and should be force to be reckoned with once we've made some tweaks.

King Of France Day 2, Race 1 was ...................... interesting.
Dead cars, stuck cars, hot tempers, massive amounts of sportsmanship and a lot of mud!

After a surprise DQ, Paul and Liam had managed to put the car into 2nd overall and 1st in class by nearly 30mins. It's not lost on Paul however that he wouldn't have been there without the help of the other competitors who assisted him through the ginormous bog holes on more than one occasion!

Car is holding up well. Precautionary change of a tyre and a steering quickener and it was all set for the night lap.

Being untimed but counting as a lap towards the overall result, the boys cruised around, parked the car up and headed straight to the hotel for a good night's kip!

It has been a busy day at King Of France today!
Wrapped a few bits up on the car first thing before heading to King Shocks for some setup work. We literally slapped the shocks on straight out the box, so it was good to have the guys look over them, make adjustments and test them up a bit before using the car properly. Even went back after pre-running to make some ride height adjustments based on what was seen out on track.

Then it was straight into pre-running. First few laps were fine, 3rd lap, while 'testing some different lines' the boys got stuck, bellied and buried in a load of rock.
Now we've been working with Goodwinch to fit a full size lowline winch on the front of the car that's setup specifically for quick, utv winch and go. Unfortunately, it looks like the organisers didn't get that memo and though we meant bog holes! A quick phone call to Wil and an original slower, but more torquy gearbox was sourced (Thanks Lee and Emma from DBAC Racing for letting me squirrel one out of your lorry!).
Great service from Wil though, who would have driven out with parts if we had needed them! So we're setup now for a bit more heavy winching, which is a great option to have!

Once back, car cleaned and checked, we headed off to qualifying. Short course, just over 2:00mins, 3 hr window, as many runs as you want.
First run was a bit of a banker and sighting. 2:19 leaving us in 8th Overall. Paul had wanted to try the original ITP Hammer Kings that came with the car,but he wasn't too impressed, so switched back to a set of 35" Obor Rocscrapper, which is a tyre Paul is a lot more familiar with. Out for a second run and boom Paul puts in a time good enough for 5th overall and 1st in class.

Quick check over of the car, very nice bit of scran down at event HQ courtesy of the organisers, and back to the hotel for a well earned sleep.

Tomorrow/Friday is going to be a tough day up in those woods doing 10 laps of a 4.5 mile course. It's going to be all about car preservation, line selection and teamwork. And that will just be too make it too the start line to do it all again on Saturday?

After a very busy few weeks, long weekends, late evenings, a trip to Litchfield and a trip to Devon, we're finally on our way to King Of France !
After doing the gearbox in Germany in the CT car, we decided we wanted to graft the bigger box into that one. With a new box not due to arrive till beginning of June, we needed a new car. Up stepped the Can-Am Maverick R XRC. It's been a fun build and we've had some awesome help with it. Time to see how it performs on the race track!

Full build spec to follow when i've got some completed pics!

Sunday saw the team head to a very sunny Ebbw Vale for Rd4 of the All Wheel Drive Club Safari Championship.

Jason was trying out his new Segway Super Villain while Paul stuck to his Can-Am Mav R.

We were all interested to see how the Segway would go in Jason's hands. Unfortunately we've been suffering with a few electrical Gremlins and these manifested themselves when Jason started to push the car. Half way through the first lap, the carcdropped into limp mode, severely restricting performance. He still managed to finish in the top ten, but it wasn't looking good for the rest of the day. After 3 runs we decided to park the car to prevent any possible engine damage. Whilst we weren't giving it a fair comparison, we can see the car does have speed and potential, so we're keen to get it sorted and try again.

With Jason sidelined, that left Paul to battle it out with Scott Weaver in the other Segway, Rob Bool and Brian Birch. Paul was on fine form, trading times with Rob and pulling a gap over 3rd and 4th. With two quick runs on 6 and 7, Paul had a just a 12 second lead over Rob, so couldn't afford to relax too much for run 8. Unfortunately Rob had a hard hit on his 8th run and hearing some strange noises, decided to park the car before anything fell off it. It was a real shame as there had been some really good racing all day but it confirmed the win for Paul with an almost 2 minute lead over 2nd after 40 miles of racing.

Big thanks to all of the AWDC for putting on the event and all the Marshals for sticking the hot weather and keeping all the teams safe. Also thanks to all the photographers for getting some epic shots!

Next up for us is King of France in just 3 weeks. This time in a new car with a stronger gearbox!

You roll one car out the workshop and roll the next straight in. Now the Segway is done, it's time to turn a Can-Am Mav R XRC from an awesome trail car, to a full blown rock racer!
Factory cage removed along with some Plastics to allow for a full race cage.
Front end stripped and re-built with CT Race Worx upper and lower arms, steering arms and steering damper. 3" King Shocks to replace the existing Fox Live Valve. Front Clip left off ready to build a winch tray for the new Goodwinch low line winch setup.
Rear end stripped. Trailing arms will be getting some additional armour. Radius rods being upgraded to a set of new Danells Off Road high clearance radius rods. Rear is also getting a pair of King Shocks.
It'll be some car when it's finished!

Jason's Mav R came to have a look in the workshop today at the new young pretender being built.
It's going to be interesting to see what the Segway Super Villain goes like in the hands of, probably one of the quickest UTV racers in the UK.
Before we let him loose on the race track though, there's a few more jobs to do to make it MSUK compliant, and we want to do a bit of testing.
Be warned though, Super Villain #61 coming to tear up a race track near you soon!

Got to love a bit of AI to generate some new stickers! 🤣🤣

Who doesn't like some nice sequence shots?
These show just some of abuse some of the components take during an event.
