Strong and experienced amateur players have two main leaks due to being mostly self-taught 🎱

1. They want to do too much with one shot and overcomplicate decisions, so they miss more balls than they should.
2. They are well aware of their game weaknesses, but don’t know how to practice properly and improve, so they are stuck at the same level for ages.

Two weeks ago, my teammate Szymon came over to fix these and take a leap forward.
🟡 We went through his technique and found a couple of small but critical deficiencies. The fixes are quite simple, but will take a couple of months to fully set as automatic because they involve changing old habits.
🟡 We clearly saw how inoptimal decisions can spoil otherwise won racks. This video is an example: trying to move the 2 from the 15 cost him a life and ruined the entire momentum at the very end of this Long Straight Pool rack.
🟡 We planned a full 3-month preparation and tournament cycle - from technical training up to playing in the WNT 2AM Prague Open in July, where we’ll go together 😎

Here are the rules of this drill for those interested:
🗒️ After a soft break, play each shot with ball in hand from the kitchen line.
🗒️ Use only the back corner pockets and play only the balls on the other side of the table. When you run those out, move the kitchen line to the other side. The balls on the center line can count as both.
🗒️ Set a number of ‘lives’ (balls you can miss) to complete the rack. Remove 1 life after a successful clearance.

Hit me up if you also struggle with similar problems - the solution is just a couple of hours away!

Kick shot precision is an art in itself 🎱

The exact cue ball path depends on stroke hardness, shot speed, tip placement, cloth and rail condition, or even temperature and humidity in the venue.

On top of that, no existing kicking system is 100% accurate.
All this means hitting even 1 rail into the object ball is not an easy task.

Like with everything in pool, the key is repetition.
Start with the cue ball straight into the pocket.
Find and remember your natural kicking speed.
Over time, you’ll start ‘just seeing’ more and more angles on the table, so aiming them will become much easier.
After this, all that’s left is ex*****on.

Play these games if you want to grow as a serious pool player 🎱

🟡 Straight pool is still #1 for pattern play, focus, and resilience, even though it’s not widely played in tournaments these days.
🟡 One pocket teaches us to win racks tactically, not by breaking and running.
🟡 15-ball rotation is great when 9-ball layouts become routine.
🟡 3 cushion billiards is all about speed and angles - nothing else will boost our kick shots and safeties so well.
🟡 Snooker and Russian pyramid are both useful to improve fundamentals and technique, each with its own flair.

Trying different things and stepping out of the usual routine is the best way to learn new insights and incorporate them in your game.

Consistent performance under pressure lies in a pre-performance routine 🎱

Its goal is to protect your attention before the match and narrow it onto the table when it’s time to play.

🟡 Treat the day before as focus conservation. Less work, less reading, less phone scrolling, less draw checking. Keep the day slightly boring and lower external input.
🟡 No phone as the first thing in the morning! Instead, do some light movement and have a quiet breakfast. Check in on how you feel - this will give you a baseline for correction.
🟡 1 hour before match is the most important. Activate yourself gently with movement, music, and light warmup on the table if possible.
🟡 For the last minutes before the lag, come up with your own rituals depending on what gets you in the right mood. Aim for a relaxed and focused state at the same time - this is the zone players want so badly. Keep it short, so you can easily memorize and repeat every time.
🟡 Don’t expect perfection from the first 1-2 racks, especially with limited warmup time. Allow yourself to adjust to the pressure and immerse into the match. While you do this, don’t rush at risky shots - play your percentages and keep focus.

It’s not about feeling perfect, but rather to achieve a collected and playable state when you need it.

I came up with a drill a while ago 🤓
Quite a fun variation of the Four Corners for longer positioning routes.

Rules:
🟡 alternate pockets
🟡 CB goes minimum 2 rails every time, should get to the other side of the table or at least stop on the center line

As you figure it out, this is a sequence of 3 shots that can be repeated symmetrically and then endlessly upon respotting.

I did a run of 15 just while testing it - let me know your score!

A basic physics lesson 🎱

Knowing exactly how playing conditions impact balls behaviour and being able to adapt quickly is a critical skill for every competitive pool player.
Fresh cloth in B4bilard & Lounge Bar was a great opportunity to see what had changed 🤓

Less friction means faster speed, more spin, and slide off the rails. We have to respond with softer shots, shorter stroke, and adjustment for wider rebound angles.

Do you like brand new or slightly used feel more?

A summary of my latest tournament life 🎱

After an ambiguous experience in Belgium, I'm rethinking my mental approach and working on stability at the table.
I've read The Inner Game of Tennis - a classic book on sports psychology that I'd known about before, but got a final push towards by Mitja Gradišnik 🙏
So I'm reworking my mental routine in terms of dealing with pressure and entering the first match of the day.

Of course, it would be naive to expect the changes to work right on the spot.
During the Polish Grand Prix in Kętrzyn, I lost my first matches on both days 😂
At least I had some time to think and chat with my AI 'mental coach' assistant on my way home.
Still holding the 16th place in the Polish national ranking, not so bad 🇵🇱

A week later, 180+ players from 14 countries gathered in Strefa DIAMOND for the Mezz Open Festival - the biggest open tournament in Poland that's become a yearly tradition.
Once again, I faced a tough group including Ralf Souquet - an invited guest star and a living legend of the sport. He'd already been a European champion when I was born😅
I managed to win all 3 matches to advance straight to Last 64, where I faced Hubert Łopotko. I gained an early lead and had my share of chances to win, but let it slip at 6:7, which then allowed Hubert to pull off the whole thing 👏

Setting top players to sweat on a regular basis is a good outcome, given I don't have a chance to practice more than 10 hours a week these days.
The progress is visible, but there's still much work to do before I'll make a really high run at this level myself.
I need more patience, discipline, and top-level action (DM for inquiries).

Maciek has developed a very diligent routine.
It works even when people start throwing darts right next to his table 😅

He’s working on a set of precision drills. This one is about putting all balls in order into one side pocket without touching a rail with the cue ball. A great one for developing a refined touch and keeping the right angle on the next shot.
We started with 5 balls, now he’s attempting 9 💪

You can also do the same with follow - just alternate the side pockets. A very frustrating experience, I guarantee you 😂

Impressive work with distractions, Maciej!

Not all wins are made in perfect style 🎱

We can’t expect 100% precision on every move, every time we play.
It’s highly unrealistic and makes us feel bad with our game, especially in competition.

Instead, we have to come to terms with the reality.
Lost the angle? Don’t force the cue ball, accept a bit longer next shot or play safe.
Too stressed out? Stick to solid percentages and simple decisions.

Allowing ourselves to be real humans, play ugly pool, and even lose matches is a critical skill on our way to grow.
Here Tomasz is making some progress with it. He went from 3 to 6 balls last time we practiced Progressive X-ball 👏

Good work, man!

Longoni cues, where’s my jump cue? 😜

I’ve changed the tip on my current one to a Taom Billiards BJ3 and put it to a test.
This is a nice challenging way of practicing jump shots by Fedor Gorst:
🟡 break
🟡 respot what’s down
🟡 set up a jump on every shot
🟡 try to run out 🤓

The new tip feels great!
It gives me more control and spin, so I’m more accurate and can play position easier.

In the drill, I also pocketed the 9 ball, but my camera went off too soon 😅

Keep shootin’ 🍄🎱
