Supraśl town, eastern Poland. Traditions of the common warfare of Tatars, Poles and Lithuanians date back to the 14th century and the Pol
ish-Lithuanian Union. Previously, the Tatar troops had been fighting for the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in which Tatar families found shelter from political turmoil in the Golden Horde. Thus through the ages, warriors from the Eurasian steppes settled in Lithuania and then in Poland. In exchange for land and a place to live, they provided well-trained and warlike troops. For centuries, the main projectile weapon of Tatar cavalry was a reflexed bow. Type of light cavalry, the way of fighting and weaponry characteristic of Tatars became in time also common in Poland and Lithuania, and comrades serving in a "Tatar manner" formed one of the basic formations. Looking at the history, the idea of propagating horseback archery as a common Tatar and Polish tradition seems to be obvious. We would like the periodically organized horseback archery competitions to become a way of nurturing traditional skills and simultaneously to show how many mutual benefits can derive from intermingling of our cultures.
