Traditional Sports

Traditional Sports Traditional sports are part of the national identity, an important part of the intangible cultural heritage.

We are interested in old sports, regional and folk sports. In the world, interest in old sports or so-called regional or folk sports is constantly growing. New clubs and traditional sports festivals are being created to preserve and save from oblivion the traditions of physical activity of nations. Traditional sports in many countries were consciously developed and treated as an element of nationa

l identity. In other countries, traditional sports have been neglected or even completely forgotten. We suggest that there is a special place for traditional sports on these pages. We want to present stories, rules of the game, photos and all possible information about traditional spots with the help of everyone interested. We would like to create a calendar of events related to traditional sports, introduce champions, coaches and people promoting traditional sports. Each piece of information, photos, press cuts or messages is important and valuable.

Bassula – traditional sport from Angola
On the website of Traditional Sports www.traditionalsports.org we have posted an article about bassula - traditional sport of Angola: https://traditionalsports.org/traditional-sports/africa/bassula-angola.html

Bassula is a traditional grappling style from the coast of Luanda, Angola, associated primarily with Axiluanda and the fishing communities of Ilha de Luanda, Mussulo, Corimba, Samba, and Cacuaco. The goal of this classic recreational form is to take down an opponent using grabs, sweeps, and projections, without striking. This article compares available Portuguese, English, and French-language accounts with literature on the history of Luanda, the Muxiluanda community, Kimbundu, African martial arts, and Atlantic cultural transfers. The source material specific to Bassula is limited and largely dependent on a single contemporary community account. Therefore, findings regarding the bissoco/kissoco, bessangana, and jinvunda variants, the biography of master Cabetula, and the relationship with capoeira are marked as requiring further archival and field verification. The most likely confirmed elements are: Angolan origin, the coastal and fishing context of Luanda, the emphasis on overthrow, and the recreational and social function.

Patolli - ancien Mesoamerican game

The earliest records we have of Patolli are from the Teotihuacanos (ca. 200 BC – 650 AD). However, it was also played by may other Mesoamerican cultures, including the Toltecs, Aztecs, Zapotecs, Mixtecs and the ancient Mayans.
While each culture had their own spin on things, the Aztecs played each game under the supervision of the god of games, Macuilxochitl (or Xochipilli).
Patolli was, at its core, a gambling game and each player was expected to wager several things to play. During the game, these wagered treasures were offered to Macuilxochitl before they eventually made their way into the winning player’s possession.
There were accounts of Montezuma enjoying watching his nobles play Patolli at his court.

Bando – traditional sport from Myanmar
On the website of Traditional Sports www.traditionalsports.org we have posted an article about bando - traditional sport of Myanmar: https://traditionalsports.org/traditional-sports/asia/bando-myanmar.html
We would like to present this sport as best as possible. If you want to add or correct something, add photos, videos or any information, we are waiting for your suggestion and materials: [email protected]

Bando (Burmese: ဗန်တို, approximately [bàɰ̃dò]) denotes a defensively oriented, primarily
unarmed martial art originating in Myanmar. In Western usage, the term has sometimes been extended to Burmese martial arts as a whole, although thaing is the broader collective term. Contemporary bando is hybrid: a legacy of combat practices, a system of physical education and self-defence, a repertoire of forms (aka), and, in some organisations, a tournament discipline including forms, weapons, light-contact, and full-contact fighting. Its best-attested institutional history begins in the twentieth century, from the multi-ethnic Military Athletic Club in Maymyo in the 1930s, through U Ba Than (Gyi)’s post-war systematisation, to U Maung Gyi’s teaching in the United States and the development of federations in Myanmar, the United States, and Europe. Older genealogies linking bando directly to Pyu polities, warrior monasteries, or particular dynasties should be treated as legitimising tradition rather than documentary proof of continuous transmission.
