Tenouchi - A Sword is not an Axe

When we begin in Budo, it is very normal to let our brute force instinct speak louder. We frequently see students with white knuckles from gripping the weapon so hard, locking their wrists and shoulders, holding the sword as if they were chopping wood with an axe. But tension is the greatest enemy of technique. In Budo, power does not come from crushing force, but from precision.

Historically, Western weapons like axes, maces, and clubs relied on brute force to cause damage through impact. Traditional Japanese weapons, however, are instruments of precision and cutting. The secret to this grip is called Tenouchi. Instead of holding the handle straight at a 90-degree angle (which locks the wrist), the weapon should cross the palm of the hand diagonally. The supporting strength remains in the pinky and ring fingers, while the thumb and index finger stay relaxed, merely guiding the weapon and forming a "V" aligned with the back of the blade.

This principle is essential for the Katana, Iaito, Bokken, Shinai, the bow in Kyudo, and, crucially, for the Jo.

The difference is like cutting a pumpkin: if you place the knife on top and just push down with force, the cut is difficult and crude. But if you slide the blade, it cuts with ease and precision. The weapon needs this fluidity to work the cut through the air.

Because it is a pure wooden staff, many people think the Jo is a club. The classical school of Jodo (Shinto Muso-ryu) has a maxim that corrects this: "Thrusts like a spear, sweeps like a halberd, and strikes like a sword". The focus is on Hasuji (the cutting line). This means that in our Jo-waza training, when we perform a Shomen Uchi, the Jo is not a piece of wood hitting; it is "cutting" with the exact same geometry and precision as the Bokken.

And an important detail for our harmony on the mat: in Aikido, if at any point someone tries to correct you by saying you are holding the weapon too loosely or "wrongly," apply the principle of harmony. Don't argue philosophy. Humbly thank them for the tip, briefly adjust your grip so the person doesn't feel ignored, and a few minutes later, return to your smooth and correct technique on the next movement. We do this without hurting anyone's feelings and without ruining our own development. Remember: loosen your hands, because true power is born from softness!

Sport? Walka? Fitness? Czym tak naprawdę jest Aikido? 🤔

Aby zrozumieć, co robimy na macie, musimy spojrzeć na trzy różne kategorie:
1. Sport: Dąży do medali, trofeów i pokonania przeciwnika w ramach określonych zasad.
2. Aktywność fizyczna: Skupia się na zdrowiu, kondycji i ruchu ciała.
3. Sztuka walki: Skupia się na technikach samoobrony i skuteczności w walce.

Aikido dotyka wszystkich tych sfer, ale nie mieści się w żadnej z nich w całości. W Aikido nie ma rywalizacji o puchary. Aikido używa ciała, ale trenuje umysł. Aikido jest bojowe, ale szuka pokoju.

Więc czym jest?

Aikido to Aikido. 🥋

To ścieżka Budō (Droga Wojownika), gdzie prawdziwym zwycięstwem jest zwycięstwo nad samym sobą (Masakatsu Agatsu).

W Kushin Dojo trenujemy z jasnym celem: by każdego dnia być lepszym DLA innych, a nie lepszym OD innych.

Naszym codziennym ćwiczeniem jest Kaizen (ciągłe doskonalenie): staramy się być o 1% lepsi dzisiaj, niż byliśmy wczoraj – zarówno na macie, jak i poza nią.
