🎙️ PODCAST: I spoke with Finding Harmony about grief, devotion, and what the practice becomes after loss.

I was at the Active Series training in Virginia when Sharath Jois passed away. I have never shared much publicly about what it was like to be there — but in this conversation with Harmony Slater, I finally did.

We talked about the hike, the circle of prayer on the trail, three sleepless nights. And we talked about everything that came before: how my grandmother brought me to my first yoga class in Rio, how watching the Ashtanga New York DVD gave me goosebumps and changed the course of my life, how I traveled to Mysore six times — first to practice with Saraswati, then with Sharath — and what it meant to receive those teachings.

We also talked honestly about the body: years of back injury connected to intense practice, learning to modify and listen, and encouraging my own students to seek specialists when the pain doesn't resolve.

And about what comes after loss: how I haven't returned to Mysore, how my priorities have shifted to support my husband and my son and my community here in Poland, and why I believe the teachings live on in everyone who received them and chose to continue.

Bianca said it best toward the end: "Nothing is forever. Not our bodies, not our communities, not our guru, not our practices."

Listen wherever you find your podcasts — search Finding Harmony with Harmony Slater.

You can also find me teaching online Mysore at 1:30pm CET, and organizing retreats through ashtangayogakatowice.com

🙏 Thank you Harmony for holding this conversation so carefully.

*Ashtanga Yoga Beginners Course*
August 08-23 (Saturdays and Sundays)

Learn with depth but not in an overwhelming way the basics of Ashtanga Yoga.

Learn step by step the Ashtanga Yoga Method: postures, breathing and moviment techniques, inner and out focus.
The key components of Surya Namaskara A and B, standing positions, and the finishing sequence.
Slowly during the course I will introduce the beginning of the Primary Series poses. We will also practice the traditional Chants in Sanskrit.

What to expect: If you feel a little lost learning the sequence, had a long break from Ashtanga or if you want to refine your skills and understanding of the asanas and vinyasas this class is for you. Lot’s of individual attention will be provided.

About the practice: Ashtanga is a set sequence of postures linked together with vinyasa, or flow of movement, in order to build heat in the body. The aim is for every breath taken to be a conscious one, creating a moving meditation. The set sequence is a consistent flow of dynamic movement designed to stretch and strengthen your body and to allow breath and energy to flow through your body easily. There is no age limit on practicing Ashtanga, or any form of yoga for that matter. If you begin a regular practice you will see great progress and change in your body.No matter what age or fitness level you are at, you can achieve greater control over your body and mind.

About the teacher: Bianca is an Authorized Level II teacher, blessed by the Paramaguru R. Sharath Jois. She practices all first, second and third series of the Ashtanga Yoga method.
She continues the learning process in Asana and Pranayama from her western teachers, recently holding a certification to teach Pranayama and deepening her studies in Vedanta.
She is also a mother and truly understand how family duties and practice affects one another. How discipline, commitment, devotion and dedication are the base of the practice and also the non attachments for results. Believing she is an eternal student of yoga, her joy is to share all the benefits this practice can bring to people’s lives, both on and off the mat.

My teacher Sharathji, was never a people pleaser. He would stand up for his values and what he believed the practice was for and ultimately for the good of the student.
He didn’t care if students would show up in Mysore with expectations regarding the practice or his teachings.
He could hold students in the same postures for a full season, or for few and sometimes for years.
He would teach what was necessary, not less not more, just the right amount for each practitioner.

Ashtanga teachers sometimes get unrealistic expectations when someone wants to work with them.
Trying to learn full primary series, but taking two hours just to get to the sitting poses or feeling bad for modifying some postures but pushing through pain to get more new poses.
Feeling constantly tired to show up for a short practice recommended by the teacher but at the same time bitter because the teacher doesn’t teach full series yet.

The problem is: students identifying their worth with how much they can do in the practice or how many poses the teacher gives to them.

To be clear, there is nothing to be given. It’s to be transmitted or passed on when the time is right.

If something hurts, communicate with all details.
The teacher will guide your practice in a way that will prevent worsening the situation.
If you are constantly tired, sick or can’t commit to show up regularly, why wanting more?

If the practice is forced and rushed, body breaks.
If you avoid facing the difficulties of some postures, the same difficulties will show up twice as hard later.

The sequences of Ashtanga is a method, a system and is rooted in lineage and like anything else in the world, will not please everyone and also is not for everyone. Sharathji reflected that. He didn’t please everyone and he definitely was not for every student.

And to add I will leave here the Patanjali Yoga Sutra 1.33

“Maitrikaruna muditopekshanam sukhadukhapunyapunyavishayanam bhavanataschitta prasadanam’’

By fostering friendliness toward the happy, compassion for the suffering, joy for the virtuous, and indifference toward the wicked, the mind remains undisturbed by jealousy, fear, or negativity.

Patanjali categorizes people in the world. There can be only four types of people:

People who are happy
People who are unhappy
People who are engaged in good acts, meritorious acts (blessed people)
People who are engaged in not so good acts or demonic acts (sinful people)

Maitri

It is the development of cordiality towards those who are happy. Whenever we feel jealous of the happiness and fortune of others, we lose energy, we shrink. To rejoice in the welfare of others is to share the wealth of the world. When you feel bitter about the happiness of others, you lose all the happiness in you.

Karuna

It is to have compassion for those who have a hard time. It is more than mere sympathy, it is a stimulus that must lead to action. True compassion is powerful. It involves the question: What can I do to help? Compassion is to recognize that we are similar and we are related.

Mudita

It is to cultivate joy towards those who are virtuous.

Upeksa

To cultivate equanimity or neutrality towards those who are full of vices. BKS Iyengar said: “When you are tough towards the defects you perceive in others, when you condemn and disdain victims of vice and you use their misfortune to feel superior, you are playing with something very dangerous. Your attitude should be: ‘If it weren’t for the grace of God, I’d be there too.’ If not, you will be creating the conditions to fall. Besides, it is exhausting wasting time criticizing others. ” The yogis understand the flaws of others by observing and studying them in themselves. This practice teaches you to be benevolent to everyone.
