Experiencing nitrogen narcosis in a controlled environment.
As part of the SANTI Scholarship Program and our long-standing partnership with DAN Europe, SANTI scholars took part in a unique hyperbaric chamber experience, simulating exposure to depth and pressure.
During the session, participants experienced typical symptoms of nitrogen narcosis, including changes in voice, impaired coordination, altered perception, delayed reactions, and euphoria - all under strict medical supervision. The experience was conducted at the National Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and supervised by Prof. Jacek Kot, one of the world’s leading hyperbaric medicine experts and a DAN specialist.
The goal of this experience was to demonstrate how a diver’s body and cognitive functions may behave at depth — in a safe, controlled setting. Only a few centers worldwide are equipped to conduct such advanced hyperbaric simulations.
Understanding these physiological and cognitive changes is essential for diving safety. Education, awareness, and first-hand experience play a crucial role in preparing divers to recognize risks and make better decisions underwater.
DAN Europe has been a trusted, long-term partner of SANTI, and together we are committed to educating and mentoring the next generation of divers - with safety always as the highest priority.
