The biggest damage ever done to Messi's legacy wasn't by his critics-it was by those who felt the need to protect him at every turn.
Today, apart from Argentinians and Barcelona fans, much of the football world sees Messi as a player who benefited from the system.
If they had simply let his football speak for itself, his numbers were already legendary. Millions would still have called him the greatest of all time.
Instead, every controversial decision, disputed award, refereeing debate, and accusation of favoritism has given people more reason to question what should have been an unquestionable legacy.
In trying to make Messi untouchable, they made his achievements more debatable than they ever needed to be.
Now, for many people, he's no longer remembered solely as a footballing genius, but also as a player the system always seemed to rescue whenever talent alone wasn't enough.
They thought they were elevating his legacy. Instead, they have done more damage to it than any critic ever could.
