Pakistan featuring Nameera Ahmed
This Weds One will focus on working in media in Pakistan and will include a panel featuring Nameera Ahmed, a Karachi based filmmaker and the director and narrator of The Mermaid of Churna Island, and Frances Hardin, a US-based filmmaker with experience working in Afghanistan.
The discussion will be moderated by Beth Mendelson, former WIFV president and current Senior Executive Producer of Special Programming at Voice of America.
The Mermaid of Churna Island is the story of Rosheen Khan, Pakistan's first and only female SCUBA diving instructor. With the help and support of Yousuf Ali, a master scuba instructor in Karachi, she boldly pursued a career in scuba diving and broke away from her conservative upbringing. Through interviews of Khan's colleagues, her students, and Yousuf Ali, the film reveals startling elements from both her scuba career and her personal life. The Mermaid of Churna Island tells the story of a courageous woman who dared to live her dream.
The film was directed and narrated by Nameera Ahmed, a Karachi-based filmmaker, visual artist, scuba diver (PADI), a Digital Reviewer for Leonardo Reviews (Leonardo/ISAST). She also teaches at the Karachi University and other schools in Karachi.
