Slice Backhand

1-Handed or 2-Handed?

For freedom of swing movement 1-Handed is better for Slice. With 2 hands on the handle it's quite difficult to execute.

If a player has a 2-Handed Backhand he must learn to hit Slice with a 1-Handed Backhand.

Examples
Novak Djokovic
Rafael Nadal.

Slice usages:

To change the tempo of the rally

Get out of trouble shot

Not enough time and space to hit topspin shot

As an approach and Volley combo

As a dropshot.

A great example is that of Roger Federer who used a combination of topspin with Slice to offset the rhythm of his opponents. If he knew that his opponent was not good at the Net, he would use a short slice to bring him in and then pass him at the net.

A good, low, slice is a great weapon against someone who likes high balls (Western grips).

In the modern game of Tennis Slice is alive and well.

How to hit it:

Grip Eastern Backhand

Stance, Square.

The Backswing is high over the left shoulder, the Racket is on the edge,
The swing path is high to low,
The Racket face is slightly open at Contact,
The finish is generally high,
In case of Roger Federer the Swing path is high to low, Racket ending right side of right foot. Basically, he knifes the ball more than anyone else.

Excellent video explaining the biomechanics of the Forehand.

The stance or the starting position of any stroke is so fundamental.

If you can't get the start right you can't get the end right.

I am grateful to late Dennis Van Der Meer, late Nick Bolletterie, Dave Miley, Robert Davis, and others, who taught me how to study a stroke, how to learn from it, and how to develop a System to teach it to our students.

The game of Tennis is evolving so we have to evolve with it.

Great comparison
A must for all players

The fundamentals are almost the same.

Both have great Backhands.

Probably I like DJ Backhand a bit more and I can elaborate on that.

Yes, it's true that Sinner has more wrists lag than DJ, but Djokovic's backswing is higher than Sinner's. Thus, what Sinner gets with his superior wrists lag, Djokovic gets the same with his high Backswing.

Players may learn from this great comparison to develop their own 2-Handed Backhands.
