The referee may change a decision on the advice of another match official for example when the referee missed any foul/serious misconduct or their view was obstructed. The other ‘on-field’ match officials (e.g. two assistant referees, a fourth official, a reserve assistant referee) may be appointed to matches and assist the referee with offences when they have a clearer view but the final decision will always be taken by the referee.

What happens if an offence occurred and play has already restarted? In principle*, the referee may only take a disciplinary disciplinary action if another match official had identified and attempted to communicate the yellow/red card offence to the referee BEFORE play restarted (e.g. an assistant referee had flagged for violent conduct off the ball).

Even though the referee did not see the indication/hear the communication until after play restarted, the offender will receive the appropriate disciplinary sanction, however, the restart associated with the offence does not apply (e.g. a red card is shown for violent conduct, but no free kick/penalty kick is awarded).
