An investigation conducted by Al Jazeera Arabic has revealed that thermal and thermobaric munitions, also referred to as vacuum or aerosol bombs, have resulted in the complete disintegration of Palestinian bodies, rendering them unrecoverable following Israeli attacks. Civil defense teams in Gaza have documented 2,842 cases of fatalities that could only be identified through biological traces, such as blood spray or small fragments of flesh, attributed to U.S.-manufactured weaponry. Thermobaric weapons generate extreme heat exceeding 2,500 degrees Celsius or 4,500 degrees Fahrenheit, effectively vaporizing their targets. These weapons have also been utilized in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the U.S. war in Afghanistan. “I entered the mosque and found myself stepping on flesh and blood,” Yasmin Mahani recounted to Al Jazeera Arabic while searching for her son's body after an Israeli strike on a school in 2024. “We were unable to locate any remains of Saad, not even a body to bury. This was the most challenging aspect.”
