They said the youth of today is different.
Maybe they are.
But maybe it’s not because they are weaker, harder to discipline, or less resilient.
Maybe it’s because the world they are growing up in is heavier.
They are exposed to more.
More comparison.
More expectations.
More pressure to succeed.
More fear of failure.
More rejection.
More voices telling them who they should be and who they should become.
And sometimes, when they step onto the court, they’re already carrying a weight we cannot see.
As coaches at Torch, we don’t just want to ask,
“Why can’t you handle this?”
We want to ask,
“What are you carrying?”
Because the player in front of us is not just an athlete.
They are a young person learning how to navigate a world that can feel overwhelming.
So yes, we will teach discipline.
We will demand effort.
We will challenge them to be better.
But we also want to teach them how to fall without giving up, how to face failure without being defined by it, how to rise after rejection, and how to keep moving when the weight feels too heavy.
Because sometimes, coaching isn't about making the load disappear.
It's about teaching them how to carry it and reminding them they don't have to carry it alone.
BUILDING RESILIENCE. One young life at a time.
