"Only 1 – 2 out of every 100 students reach Black Belt, and of those, only 1 out of every 1,000 reaches Nidan (2nd Dan)." — Mas Oyama
But those numbers only have meaning if the student has truly gone through the process.
A Black Belt is not defined by a certificate, a promotion, or the passage of time. It is defined by the hardships endured, the discipline maintained, the lessons learned, and the standards upheld throughout the journey.
If a dojo produces many graduates, it is worth asking an honest question:
Did they truly go through the process, or did they simply pass through the ranks?
The value of a Black Belt is not measured by how many are awarded, but by how faithfully the path was followed.
「100人の門下生のうち、黒帯に到達するのは1〜2人。その中で二段に到達するのは1,000人に1人である。」 — 大山倍達
しかし、この言葉が意味を持つのは、本当に修行の過程を経験した者だけである。
黒帯とは、証書や昇段によって決まるものではない。
稽古の積み重ね、困難への挑戦、規律の維持、そして武道の精神を守り続けた結果として得られるものである。
もし多くの有段者を輩出しているのであれば、一度自問するべきである。
「彼らは本当にその過程を歩んだのか。それとも、ただ段位を通過しただけなのか。」
黒帯の価値は、その数ではなく、どれだけ誠実に道を歩んだかによって決まる。
