I recently had a casual conversation with a fellow dance teacher about workshops. She mentioned that she doesn't usually encourage her students to attend workshops conducted by other artists because she's afraid some of them might eventually become teachers themselves.
And honestly, my perspective is different.
If my student becomes qualified to teach, why should I be afraid? I should be proud!
As teachers, our role is not to keep our students dependent on us forever. Our role is to guide them, help them discover their potential, & give them the confidence to grow beyond what they once thought possible.
❗If they learn from other artists, explore new techniques, & eventually become teachers themselves, that doesn't diminish our value. It means we've contributed to someone's growth.
Teaching is not about creating followers. It's about developing capable, confident, and independent artists.
A student's success is not your competition. Their growth is not your loss. And their ability to teach others does not erase the knowledge and foundation you helped them build.
If you're a teacher who is afraid of being outshined by your own students, perhaps it's time to reflect on why you teach in the first place.
Because a truly great teacher doesn't feel threatened when a student rises. A truly great teacher celebrates it.
When you help someone grow, don't resent them for growing. Be proud that you were part of their journey. 💛
