Two of the most exciting young talents on the WTA Tour Driven by Mercedes-Benz, 18-year-old Jovic and 21-year-old Eala have been friends ever since the 2022 US Open. Eala won that tournament to become the first Filipina junior Grand Slam champion in history, and partnered with Mirra Andreeva to defeat Jovic and Shannon Lam 6-2, 6-2 in the first round of the girls' doubles.

“We got killed," Jovic recalled. "That was the first time I met her, and she's been a very nice person ever since. Last year I got to know her much better."

“I wish we could play at later stages of the tournaments," she said in her press conference.

“Hopefully when both of our rankings go up, we will be on other sides of the brackets until semis or finals."

For the second time in three weeks, Iva Jovic meted out a straight-sets defeat of her good friend Alexandra Eala to advance to the HSBC Championships quarterfinals.

ALEX EALA FAILS TO ADVANCE TO THE QUARTERFINALS LOSING TO IVA JOVIC IN STRAIGHT SETS 2-6 2-6.

Alex finally had a big hold in her first service game of the second set but Jovic with back to back aces held serve 1-1. Jovic then had her first break of serve then Alex couldn’t convert on her own break point to fall behind 1-3.

Alex on serve missed on her game point allowing Jovic her double break 4-1. Jovic continued her outstanding play by holding serve easily 5-1 but Alex managed to save a match point to hold serve 2-5.

Serving for the match Jovic had no plan of extending the inevitable holding serve to finish the match 6-2.

ALEX EALA LOSES THE 1ST SET 2-6.

Both players came out very intense in the first game of the set with Alex being broken then Jovic holding serve 2-0. Alex finally had an easy love service game 1-2 but Jovic reciprocated 3-1.

Alex couldn’t avoid a second break after lapsing into unforced errors 1-4 but fortunately her returning skills finally came into play saving a game point then breaking Jovic 2-4.

Jovic with her clean ball striking had her third break of serve 5-2 then served out the set 6-2.

We love to see it: Alex Eala and Iva Jovic are squaring off today at the WTA 500 HSBC Championships! They may be close friends off the court, but expect nothing but pure focus and grit once their match starts at The Queen’s Club.
