In swimming and in pool it is not the smooth stroke that you want to do for health, but the spike, the snap.
For each stroke and kick, aim to spike. This will force your body to workout more rather than good refined strokes that allow you to swim for miles.
Remember our goal at the pool is to first do it for health; then for pleasure.
Suggestion
1. Per dolphin kick on the downward motion, spike it.
2. Per scissors kick on the crawl, spike it.
3. Per pull on the crawl, spike it.
Then rest. If you are able to breathe, not as bubbles, but inhale exhale hold for 2 to 3s, less than 10 x. Continue. It means you still have something left in the tank.
But if it takes you 10 or more of these before you are relaxed to make a swim, you are done for the set.
Swim often, swim hard, and swim.
