POC paves resolution of volleyball leadership crisis

THE Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) has achieved the first step in solving the volleyball leadership crisis following the resignation of all members of the board of the suspended Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF).
“That’s the first step and they all agreed to resign,” Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino said after the volleyball general assembly called by the POC on Monday morning at the Solaire Theater Board Room in Parañaque City.

The POC is the “caretaker” of all national volleyball federation activities after the FIVB suspended the PNVF primarily on poor governance last May—this was preceded by a similar sanction by the Philippine Sports Commission and followed by the POC.

Also agreed upon was the creation of a new 13-member PNVF board that includes athletes representatives, as well as for the major collegiate leagues—UAAP and NCAA—to heed the call of the federation on the lending of their athletes to the national teams.

The position of chairman was also removed and that the POC will have a seat in the board and for the secretary-general to be appointed by the president during the assembly attended by close to 40 former board members and stakeholders.

“This is to introduce inclusivity and, more importantly, that the stakeholders prioritize the call of the national team,” added Tolentino who presided over the assembly with POC secretary-general Atty. Wharton Chan. All amendments on the PNVF constitution, Tolentino added, have been approved and that the POC will call for another assembly on August 10 to tackle the next steps toward fresh elections of the federation.

The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) remains steadfast in its mandate to safeguard the welfare of our athletes and ensure the unhindered development of Philippine sports.

With this commitment, the POC has officially stepped up to supervise and manage the national volleyball teams for all upcoming major international campaigns. Under the leadership of POC President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino and Secretary-General Atty. Wharton Chan, the POC has finalized and locked in the masterplan for the upcoming Aichi-Nagoya 20th Asian Games.

Front and center of this national campaign is the country's rising volleyball star, Bella Belen, who headlines a stacked and deeply talented Alas Pilipinas Women’s pool. To steer our women's squad toward continental success, the POC has officially reappointed Japanese head coach Takayuki Minowa.

On the men's side, international tactician Angiolino Frigoni has been reappointed as head coach to lead a powerhouse Alas Pilipinas Men's squad. Both coaching appointments will take effect on July 1 and run through October 15.

To ensure our national athletes are fully equipped with the world-class support they deserve, the POC is working in close coordination with the Premier Volleyball League (PVL), through its President Ricky Palou and Commissioner Sherwin Malonzo, to guarantee absolute logistical and competitive backing for the women's squad. Furthermore, the POC has given the coaching staff complete free will to finalize the tournament's 12-player roster for each team from the pools below:
