PREPPING: THE 5 D's OF HOME SECURITY
Whether you're an apocalypse prepper or you just want a secured home these 5 D's might save you and your family from home invasion.
As discussed on previous post ( #027), when social unrest from whatever reasons arise there will be no more law and order. Every home will be unsafe. But for the meantime, let's focus on the usual burglar and the likes, and not the total chaos type.
Let these 5 D's guide you in protecting your fortress.
1. DETER
You should have an outer perimeter. If you have a fence, that's one. Whether you have fence or not, have something to deter potential trespassers. Lighting. Burglars like to operate in the dark or in the shadows. Signs, like "This area is protected by CCTV" or "Warning: electric fence" or " Warning: guard dogs" may make the bad guys think twice. An actual guard dog is a good deterrent than just a bluff signage. To deter means to warn or discourage intrusion.
2. DETECT
In case the intruders make their way through your first line of defense, your home must have the next level of security.
Detecting trespassers is vital. Install motion detectors, CCTV, and other electronic surveillance methods which can sense β and record any activity happening. By these you can have valuable ID of the suspects. If you are watching real-time, you can see how many they are and possible weapons, and you may know what to expect. As soon as your warning goes off, call the police or authorities immediately.
3. DENY
This is all about preventing entry to your home.
Two-thirds of all burglars break in through doors. The remaining one-third get in through a window. Make these entry points as impenetrable as possible. Look for other places where they can enter. There are aside from doors and windows but I will not write it down here.
4. DELAY
Most of the times, they can't be stopped just by denying entry. They aren't there for nothing. By this time, they are already forcing entry. The police should be on their way. Hope for the best.
For doors you can add deadbolts to it. But the doors should be strong, first of all. Even if your locks are good but the door itself is weak, they can just kick it open. For sliding doors, a stopper will add security. Glass doors and windows and glass panels are vulnerable. Put safety film on these or use safety glasses. Put metal grills on the outside too. Of course, these reinforcements should be put beforehand.
Think of other things to slow down the invaders. It's a "delaying the game" tactic.
5. DEFEND
This is the final and innermost ring of security.
If the intruders make it through your fourth layer, your final layer is to defend your home. Remember, you cannot talk an intruder out of his plan. Prepare to fight. The criminals might kill you anyway. If you think you cannot fight, have a flight plan - either a secret panic room or bunker or an escape route.
Be PREPPED.
