The UCC Covered Court sparked with energy as student-athletes from different tertiary departments joined for the Basketball and Volleyball Men's Tryouts.
The tryouts commenced with introductions of both new and returning players, followed by a series of drills to assess their skills and prepare them for competitive play. Mr. Edward Alfon L. Baccay, the trainer-coach of volleyball, and Mr. Jose G. Castro, the trainer-coach of basketball together with Mr. Rowell C. Libatique, the over-all coach and adviser of UCC Sports Club, guided the athletes. The coaches explains that they are only looking for the best of the best among the brave and dedicated players to represent UCC in various sports events both on and off campus.
"Fail to prepare, prepare to fail," Coach Castro to the players during his introduction, as this would serve as a reminder and motivator to them throughout their training and future competitions.
The coaches highlighted the importance of adhering to rules and regulations, maintaining discipline and commitment, fostering teamwork, and balancing academic and extracurricular activities. Training for the selected athletes will begin in the first week of October, with tournaments scheduled for both inside and outside the campus throughout October and November.
During the volleyball tryouts, 14 players were chosen among the 18 aspirants after the three game plays. In the basketball tryouts, 23 players were divided into two teams but only 13 players will advance after their training. There will be another evaluation for the players during their trainings as the coaches will observe and consider the attitudes of the players during game plays, and their academic standing.
There are areas for improvement that need to be considered, particularly in the basketball game. Players needs to re-learn the basic sport terminologies to enhance their understanding of the coach's instructions and avoid repetition during training. Also, executing proper game techniques, as some players exhibited shortcuts during the tryouts.
