At 12 he played for the Philippines. He has not played for it in 12 years.

Wesley So earned his final grandmaster norm at 14, the youngest Filipino ever to do it. He played 4 Olympiads for the country. The first one he was 12 years old.

In 2013 he won the Philippines its first ever gold at the World Universiade. He received nothing for it. The Sports Commission said the event was not covered by the incentives law, and the Olympic Committee had not sanctioned the trip.

In his words, the country refused to recognise it because of a quarrel between the kings of the sports bodies.

In 2014 he asked the national federation to release him. By November he was registered to the United States.

By 2017 he was the 2nd ranked player in the world at 2822. He has won 3 US Championships. He beat Magnus Carlsen 13.5 to 2.5 to become the first world Fischer Random champion. In August he won the Sinquefield Cup for the 3rd time.

The best player this country has ever produced plays under another flag.

Brandon Rios took a one sided beating from Manny Pacquiao in Macau in 2013. Afterward, bloodied, he faced the press: "He never hurt me one bit. I'm not hurt, I'm not stunned." Denial, or the pride of a fighter who refused to admit it.

Every league. Every athlete.

She snuck her own son past gym guards just to see him.

Josie Gabuco, a boxer, was training and competing while raising her son largely on her own, often sneaking him past security just to spend a few minutes with him between sessions.

She kept fighting through that balancing act, and in 2012 became the first Filipino woman to win a world amateur boxing title, a milestone built on top of single motherhood, not instead of it.

Athletes are people first, carrying entire lives most fans never see, so who do you think she was really fighting for?

"I will not be there forever, so it's time for new leadership."

Aby Marano captained the Philippine women's volleyball team from the 2018 Asian Games. In March 2023, at 31 and still captaining her club side, she walked away from the national team. Her reason was to open the role up to younger players.

He had to crowdfund his own Olympic trip.

Michael Martinez, a figure skater, made history in 2014 as the first Southeast Asian to compete in figure skating at the Winter Olympics, a milestone built almost entirely on his family's own money since the sport barely had government funding at the time.

Years later, chasing a return to the Games, he turned to the public to help cover training, ice time and competition costs his federation couldn't provide.

Despite the support, he still fell short of qualifying for that Olympic cycle.

Athletes are people first, not line items in somebody's budget, so should a federation ever let it get that far?

His own federation said no to his training trip.

Eumir Marcial, an Olympic boxer, has long received a monthly government allowance through the PSC, support that was never pulled. But when he needed backing for a specific U.S. training stint ahead of a major tournament, his own federation, ABAP, did not endorse the trip.

With that specific funding in limbo, basketball player Thirdy Ravena stepped in and covered what Marcial's own sport couldn't provide.

Marcial trained anyway and went on to win Olympic bronze, proof the gap didn't have to end his run.

Athletes are people first, carrying each other when the system falls short, so who else is quietly doing this behind the scenes?

He used to scavenge a dumpsite just to get by.

Carlo Paalam, a boxer from Cagayan de Oro, grew up in a family poor enough that he picked through trash for scrap and recyclables to sell for extra income.

He found boxing almost by accident, drawn in partly by the sport's feeding programs before it ever gave him a medal.

He carried that same hustle into Tokyo 2020, leaving with a silver medal he himself described as "recycled," built from nothing into something real.

Athletes are people first, shaped by circumstances most of us never see, so how many stories like his go untold?

She sold chicken droppings just to eat.

Nesthy Petecio, a boxer from Davao Oriental, grew up poor enough that she sold whatever she could, including scraps most people would throw away, just to help put food on the table.

She trained in makeshift gyms with little real equipment, years before anyone outside her hometown knew her name.

In Tokyo 2020, Petecio became the first Filipina to win an Olympic boxing medal, taking home silver after a career built on almost nothing.

Athletes are people first, long before they're medalists, so what does it actually take to get out of a situation like that?

HE JUST WON HIS THIRD STRAIGHT GOLD. HE DID IT FOR HIS 8-MONTH-OLD DAUGHTER.

Ernie Gawilan is the Davao City para swimmer who just won the Philippines' first gold of the 2026 Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya, taking the men's 400m freestyle S7 in 4:56.72.

It was his third straight Asian Para Games title in that event, after 2018 and 2023, and it locks in his spot at the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics, his fourth Games.

He'd spent about four months away from his wife, Ilonah Jane, and their 8-month-old daughter, Eliana, to train for this one. He said he kept picturing himself putting the medal on her when he got home.

The win also landed just before the couple's first wedding anniversary on October 28. He called it an early anniversary gift.

Athletes are people first, so what's greater than a father racing to get home to his daughter?

University of the East has lost 27 basketball games in a row.

All 7 of them this season. One more and they own the second longest losing streak of the UAAP's Final Four era outright.

They were once the biggest program in Philippine college basketball. 18 UAAP championships, more than any school has ever won. The last one came in 1985.

Since then they have reached 5 finals and lost all 5. Nothing else.

Not one player on the roster today had been born the last time UE won a title.

Then in September the school opened a new gym on campus, named for a former Red Warriors coach. The first UAAP game ever played inside it was won by UE. It was the juniors, not the seniors.

The wait is 41 years and counting. But the building is new.
