At some point in this journey, every serious pool player has thought about quitting.
You know the moment. The match that broke you. The tournament exit that made you question whether all those hours were ever going to mean anything.
I have had those moments too. The money poured into travel and tournaments. The exhaustion that builds up over weeks on the road. Matches where i felt I should have won. There were nights I sat alone in a hotel room in a country far from home wondering if any of it was worth it.
Before you put the cue down for good, let’s go back to the beginning. Why did we start?
Some of you started for the puzzle. The first time you read a rack, saw the pattern, and executed it ball by ball. Your mind and body working in perfect agreement. That feeling is rare in life. It was enough to bring you back the next day.
Some of you started for the people. The friend who brought you to the pool room for the first time. The community you never expected to find. People from completely different walks of life, connected by something that needed no explanation.
Some of you started because it was the one place where the noise stopped. Where for a few hours it was just you, the table, and nothing else in the world mattered.
That reason you started, it has not disappeared. It is still there. Underneath the frustration, the losses, the doubt. And if you stay long enough to remember it, the game will give you something far greater than the reason you came.
Patience. Not the kind where you wait calmly for something good to happen. The kind where you stay disciplined and precise when everything is going wrong and you still have to make the next shot.
Resilience. How to lose with grace. How to come back after the worst miss of the match and treat the next shot like it is the first one.
Humility. Because no matter how well you played yesterday the table will humble you today. You are always a student. Perfection is the destination, not the arrival point.
And the most important one, to know yourself. Pool removes every excuse. No teammate to blame, just you and the truth of who you are under pressure. And if you are honest with what you see, that truth makes you better. Not just at pool. At everything.
To play pool seriously is to have a chance to become a better human being.
Not because pool is more important than other things in life. But because the lessons it demands from you are the same lessons life demands from you. The table is just where you practice them.
So the next time you think about quitting, go back to why you started. Remember what the game has already given you. Not in wins or trophies. But in who you have become because of it.
And then get back to the table.
