I listen to a lot of podcasts. A LOT. When I started the Wildcast in 2020 it was a way for me to have conversations with old friends and people I knew during the lockdown. I didn't realize back then that 3 years later I would be having conversations with incredible individuals like PattieGonia, Conrad Anker, and on the 50th Episode of the Wildcast no less than the goat 🐐 of mountain endurance sports, Kilian Jornet! I realize after 50 episodes that having these conversations with all these amazing people from all over the world that this medium is truly one I love, a long form conversation that goes beyond sound bites, a lot of news and articles we get online these days are clickbait focusing on a few sentences that will evoke emotion but a conversation like this one that spans an hour not only provides insight but also much much needed context into the thoughts and processes of a person. Having all these conversations over the last 3 years has really thought me to go beyond being provoked by a tweet or a sentence someone says online and look for the context of why these people have gone on to make those statements. A lot of it is truly lost in the garbage of information we get these days but sitting down to have a conversation even with people you would think have completely opposite opinion to yourself opens up a world of understanding and learning for both of you.

Thank you to everyone who has followed the Wildcast especially those that have been listening from the very first episode. This milestone we've reached at episode 50 is for you all. 🙏

The Wildcast EP50: Kilian Jornet -Mountain Athlete & Earth Warrior

Episode Link: https://linktr.ee/JPALIPIO

Quite possibly the best mountain athlete we have seen in this generation with a versatility unrivaled by most in the field he has chosen to compete in. Kilian is in a class of his own winning some of the toughest mountain ultra races on earth from the UTMB to Western States and Hardrock his record is unparalleled but the amazing part of his performance is his versatility moving from long distance mountain ultras to short trail races like Zegama, Sierra Zinal, and even Vertical KMs is unparalleled in this field. Not to mention being an accomplished Skimo racer and mountaineer summiting Mt. Everest in record fashion twice among a list of other fast ascents around the globe. Kilian does literally everything in the mountains and he does them well!

It would be a disservice to Kilian if we only talked about his Athletic achievements because a lot of what makes him a truly special athlete and member of this planet is his connection to nature and the mountains. It feels deeply personal when you talk to him about his work on climate change, preserving the wild spaces in which he derives so much joy as well as a source of his livelihood and turning his fame into activism and advocacy something a lot of athletes shirk from for fear of losing sponsorship or being bashed online. Kilian has used his position and fame to push for a better planet for everyone and that is clearly shown in his goals each season minimizing air travel to lower his carbon footprint and choosing to live a life which is much lower impact on the land and the planet.

This advocacy filters into every aspect of Kilian's life and family from his racing schedule all the way to the new shoe and outdoor brand he has set up Nnormal which at its core has some very unique values -longevity -he raced in one shoe all season in 2022, designing for emotional product sustainability a unique term we discuss in this conversation and value.

This is Kilian Jornet -lifelong athlete, lover of the mountains, warrior for the earth on episode 50 of the Wildcast Podcast.

What fuels your passions? What fuels your adventures? We took some time over the pandemic to rethink what has fueled us for the last 20 years and have come to realize that it is our home in the mountains that has kept us going continuously pushing the boundaries of exploration and bringing people into the outdoors. Every ridge is magic and every valley is another undiscovered country. So for 2023 we are paying homage to the home that has nurtured our passions and allowed us to explore its nooks and crannies, its ridges, valleys, rivers, and peaks.

In partnership with the great Abrera of Kikomachine Komix! we pay homage to our home:
