UP Maroon Esports mourns the loss of fellow Iskolars ng Bayan Alyssa Alano and Maureen Santuyo, as well as all the victims of the Toboso 19 massacre on 19 April 2026, which also displaced more than 600 individuals and families in the area.
Alyssa was a smart and kikay student leader, but beyond the walls of UP, she chose to live with the masses to better understand the struggles of farmers in Negros. Maureen, meanwhile, embodied a deep commitment to education and public service, clearly demonstrated through her impactful engagements with the peasant community. Their lives are an inspiration to all of usโthat a true Iskolar ng Bayan must not be afraid to step out of their comfort zones to better understand the realities of the people who support our education, and to whom we should always give back.
In the midst of remembering their legacies, MRN, as esports leaders, encourages all members of the UP community to stand in solidarity in demanding justice for their deaths, affirming that our communityโs values do not end in-game but carry over into how we respond to real-world injustices.
Collectively, we can counter the disinformation campaign propagated by the state to tarnish the names of Alyssa, Maureen, and the Toboso victims by speaking about their lives as student activists and peasant advocates. It disgusts us to see disrespectful comments borne out of ignorance, malice, and apathy. Nonetheless, the truth shall always prevail if it is continuously spoken of and shared.
The Toboso 19, alongside others whose lives were taken by a fascist state, shall be remembered through the stories of the masses who witnessed their labor of love.
Patuloy ang laban.
Patuloy ang pakikibaka.
Justice for Alyssa Alano and Maureen Santuyo!
Justice for the Toboso 19!
Justice for Chad Booc, and to all slain civilians!
Uphold International Humanitarian Law!
