Gilas Pilipinas Sweeps Iran, Completes Perfect Window at Home

MANILA, Philippines — Gilas Pilipinas capped a remarkable homestand with another statement victory, defeating Iran, 68–56, Sunday night at the Mall of Asia Arena to complete a sweep of the fourth window of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers.

The Filipinos overcame another sluggish start, falling behind early before turning the game around with disciplined defense and timely offensive plays. After taking a narrow 36–34 lead at halftime, Gilas pulled away in the second half and kept Iran at bay down the stretch.

Dwight Ramos led the Philippines with 16 points, while Gilas' defense frustrated the Iranians throughout the second half. The victory came just two days after the Nationals escaped Jordan, 82–81, in a thrilling overtime battle.

Playing without injured naturalized star Justin Brownlee, Gilas showed that its all-Filipino lineup could deliver when the pressure was at its highest.
The back-to-back victories lifted the Philippines to 4–4 in Group E, keeping its campaign for a place in the 2027 FIBA World Cup firmly alive. Iran dropped to 5–3.
From a dramatic overtime escape against Jordan to a composed victory over Iran, Gilas Pilipinas has turned a crucial home window into a major momentum boost.

Gilas Pilipinas Escapes Jordan in Overtime Thriller

MANILA, Philippines — Gilas Pilipinas survived a tense overtime battle against Jordan, 82–81, on Friday night at the Mall of Asia Arena to open the second round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers on a winning note.

The Philippines overcame a difficult start, trailing Jordan 28–14 after the opening quarter and 44–39 at halftime. Gilas gradually clawed its way back in the second half before forcing the game into overtime at 72-all.

With the game hanging in the balance, Gilas kept its composure in the extra period and held on for the dramatic one-point victory. The win was particularly significant for the Philippines, which entered the second round needing a strong start after a challenging first round.

Playing without naturalized star Justin Brownlee, who was unavailable for the fourth window, Gilas relied on a collective effort from its all-Filipino lineup. Kai Sotto also returned to the national team setup, joining veterans such as Scottie Thompson, CJ Perez, Dwight Ramos and June Mar Fajardo.

The victory gives Gilas Pilipinas a huge boost in its bid to advance through the Asian Qualifiers. More importantly, it showcased the team's resilience—turning an early deficit into a thrilling overtime triumph against a Jordan squad that had been one of the stronger teams in Group E.

🏀🇵🇭 GILAS PILIPINAS WOMEN STUMBLE AGAINST CANADA, 85-38

GUADALAJARA, MEXICO — A tough night on the international stage for the Gilas Pilipinas Women, as the Philippine squad suffered an 85-38 defeat to world No. 7 Canada in the FIBA Women’s Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament.

Canada imposed its size, physicality, and defensive pressure from the opening tip, holding Gilas to just four points in the first quarter while building a commanding 23-4 lead. The Filipinas struggled to find their rhythm offensively as Canada continued to widen the gap throughout the game.

🇵🇭 Jack Animam led the Philippines with 11 points, eight rebounds, and four assists, while Vanessa De Jesus added nine points and five rebounds. Kacey Dela Rosa contributed eight points and five rebounds.

But beyond the final score, this game served as another important measuring stick for a Gilas Women program that is still developing against the world’s elite.

🇨🇦 Canada showed why it is ranked among the best teams in women’s basketball.

🇵🇭 For Gilas, the challenge now is how to respond.

The loss comes after the Philippines also fell to host Mexico, 61-58, leaving the team in a difficult position in its bid to advance in the tournament.

🇵🇭 STILL FIGHTING

A 47-point defeat is undeniably painful—but international basketball is also about learning from the toughest nights.

The Gilas Women cannot afford to dwell on the loss.

The focus now shifts to the next opportunity to compete, regroup, and show the character that has defined Philippine basketball on the international stage.

One tough game does not define this team.

The challenge is to make sure the next game tells a different story.

🇵🇭 Laban, Gilas Women. The fight continues.

🏀🇵🇭 SGA’S JONES CUP FATE: WHY JAPAN VS. KOREA MATTERS

🇯🇵 IF JAPAN BEATS KOREA…

SGA’s semifinal hopes stay alive.

A Japan upset over Wonju DB Promy would prevent the Korean side from pulling further away in the standings. Combined with an SGA victory in its remaining game, this could open the door for the Philippines to secure one of the coveted semifinal spots.

In short:

🇯🇵 Japan win
➡️ Korea takes another loss
➡️ SGA remains in contention
➡️ The door to the semifinals stays open

🇰🇷 IF KOREA BEATS JAPAN…

🚨 SGA’s situation becomes much more complicated.

A Korea victory would strengthen Wonju’s position and make the semifinal race even more difficult for SGA.

Remember, the tournament format is unusual this year: Chinese Taipei Blue, as a host team, already has an automatic semifinal berth, leaving only limited spots for the remaining teams. The preliminary round also uses a double round-robin format.

That means SGA’s 4-1 record alone does not guarantee a Final Four appearance.

🎯 THE BOTTOM LINE

For SGA, today's game is simple:

They need Japan to do them a favor.

But even a Japan victory will only keep the door open. SGA still needs to take care of business in its own remaining game and rely on the tournament’s standings and quotient system to determine whether that door ultimately leads to the semifinals.

After two consecutive Jones Cup championships in 2024 and 2025, SGA is now fighting for its third straight title—but this time, the road is far more complicated.

🔥 One game won’t decide everything. But one game could change everything.

🇵🇭 SGA-Pilipinas: still alive, still fighting, but now needing help from Japan.
