Dojo Kun/Moral Precepts:
Every Shotokan Karate-Do organizations have their own versions or translations of the original written in Kana. I had Copilot list the different possible translations of each key words and form alternative translations of the precepts. This could help Karate students to have their own personal understanding of the precepts wherein aside from having our organization's translation as our guide to self mastery, one can formulate his own understanding to widen his path towards his personal improvement.
1. Jinkaku kansei ni tsutomuro koto
Jinkaku: Personality, Character, Moral, Integrity
Kansei: Completion, Perfection, Fulfillment
ni: Toward, in the direction of
Tsutomuro koto: To endeavor, strive, to make an effort
"Strive toward the perfection of character".
2. Makoto no michi o mamoru koto
Makoto: sincerety, truth, honesty, integrity
no michi: the way, the path, the principle, the course of conduct
Mamoru koto: to protect, to uphold, to keep, to adhere to
" To protect the way of truth and sincerity"
3. Doryoku no seishin o yashinau koto
Doryoku: effort, hard work,
seishin: spirit, mindset, mentality
yashinau: to cultivate, foster, nurture
koto: the act of, the matter of
" Nurture an attitude of hard work or perseverance"
4. Reigi o omonzuru koto
Reigi: manners, courtesy, etiquette
omonzuru: to respect, to value, to esteem
koto: the act of
" To value etiquette", "the act of esteeming courtesy"
5. Kekki no yu o imashimuru koto
Kekki: resolve, spirit, determination, vigor, hot-bloodedness,
impetuous spirit
yu: courage, bravery
imashimuru: to admonish, to restrain, to discipline
" To admonish hot-blooded bravery"
