I had a few of these lately, phone calls from our staff who were completely bamboozled by customers asking for a Shearwater Jetpack 🙂 So what have we here? The Avelo system has been around for a little while but is now strongly tied in with . Far be it from me to explain it all and get it right, best understanding would be had from attending an important event being hosted at Solitude Acacia from Jan 31st onwards where Shearwater CEO Jason Leggatt will spend three days explaining, and training will run for up to a ten day program. But in brief the Avelo is a battery driven system whereby a special hydrotank changes its weight during a dive, largely doing away with buoyancy changes associated with BCD use during a dive, and ends up being a smaller and lighter to manage package to boot. All carried by the aforementioned Jetpack.
An unlock code and firmware upgrade lets your existing Shearwater computer manage it all. On all the air integrated computers AVELO Mode includes :
-Personal/gear/buoyancy setup menu
-Gas time remaining as % of starting pressure
Tank pressure
-Calculation of your buoyancy status
-User input to “clear” buoyancy status to “neutral”
-Cloud support for Avelo profiles
-Dive shops can send profiles to Avelo dashboard to use as a teaching device.

Exploring capabilities in the small hours of the morning last week. We had a boat in Batangas and I could follow it all the way there and back while having a coffee in the middle of Makati. The video is just a screen grab of a view of the track from the app history. These are the devices our guides carry on all their tech dives - making it extremely hard to lose anyone on the surface no matter how unforeseen the circumstances of the dive become.

A couple of years ago at ADEX Jim Standing of Fourth Element warned us to watch out for a documentary to be called The Big Sea, exposing the health risks to factory workers in the neoprene history - a film made in an area known as Cancer Alley, Lousiana.

At this point Fourth Element were some way already down the path to abandoning traditional neoprene and the recently launched Xenos Arc marks a huge commitment to stepping in that direction. Using chiefly OCENA® sustainable natural rubber, this suit reminds us of what Fourth Element’s position is and always has been with respect to the environment.

I was about to try and screen grab a video of what the Halcyon app can do with a Symbios but this is a hundred times better :-) a much under appreciated feature…

We are live...! After keeping these hiding in a cupboard for a week the Shearwater Swift GPS is on our shelves this morning. For anyone who wants more than just air integration in their repertoire.. Know exactly where you have just been diving, and importantly…how to get back next time!
This version will work with any air integrated Shearwater computer, be it Peregrine TX, Perdix 2, Tern TX, Teric, Nerd 2 or Petrel 3. Just make sure you are running the latest Firmware on whatever you have and you will be set to go. To give you something further to investigate this Monday morning, download the new Dive Shearwater app which is where the GPS information recorded on your dive entries and exits will appear in your log, and allow you to see maps of all the places you’ve been to and highlight your favourites. If you’re using Shearwater Cloud to analyze detailed graphs of dive profiles, keep doing that for the time being, Cloud won’t be going away until all of those features have found their way into the new Dive Shearwater app.

Something that already snuck in to our shelves and something that will do soon. The Fourth Element Tidal Robe in Graphite is here, the Xenos Arc wetsuit that is lurking underneath in these pics, will come..in the New Year...

What's it all about? The Tidal Robe is for anybody who spends time in the water from scuba diving to open water swimming, to keep themselves warm and dry on the surface. A long poncho, it goes down to your knees to cover as much of you as possible even when you're sitting down, while the double zip lets you unzip from the bottom for mobility.

The Storm Poncho from Fourth Element is a lighter alternative with the same waterproofing but, thinner insulation and no front zipper.

Good news this morning. Back in July Sam Collett trained on a Halcyon Symbios in Singapore and has been more happily diving with it than we have ever seen him with a CCR before ;-) Now it's a huge step closer to wider agency acceptance and him being able to teach it right here at Tech Asia!
