🏅 Do Student‑Athletes Lose Grades When They Compete? Here’s What DepEd Really Says
The Department of Education (DepEd) ensures that student‑athletes are not academically disadvantaged for representing their school in official athletic competitions.
While there is no single law called “Athletes’ Grading Law,” these protections are grounded in:
RA 10676 (Student‑Athletes Protection Act)
DepEd Order No. 8, s. 2015
Relevant Regional and Division Memoranda
✅ What Are the Actual Rules?
🔹 1. Can a Student‑Athlete’s Grade Go Down?
No—under the “No Lower Grade” policy:
If the computed grade is lower than the previous quarter → the previous grade is retained
If the computed grade is higher → the higher grade is recorded
📌 Applies to student‑athletes who are in good academic standing (not failing more than two core subjects).
🔹 2. What Academic Support Must Schools Provide?
Schools are required to give due consideration, including:
✅ Make‑up classes or special examinations
✅ Alternative activities or SLMs during training/competition
✅ No grade deductions for absences due to official sports participation
🔹 3. Can an Athlete Be Disqualified Academically?
Yes, but with clear limits:
Failing more than two (2) core subjects may affect eligibility for higher‑level competitions
❌ Schools cannot withhold grades, cards, or clearances as punishment
🔹 4. Can Student‑Athletes Still Receive Awards?
Yes ✅
Under DepEd Order No. 36, s. 2016:
Student‑athletes may receive Special Recognition
Sports participation is a valid co‑curricular activity, even if the learner is not With Honors
📌 Important Reminder
Implementation may vary by Division or Region.
Always refer to your official Division Memorandum for local guidelines.
