Most of the things holding people back from their IDC aren’t actually requirements. You just need to meet the prerequisites, show up ready to learn, and trust the process.

What you do need is the passion for diving and the willingness to show up and learn. The IDC takes care of the rest. That’s quite literally what it’s built for.

Welcome to becoming a PADI Specialty Instructor — today’s course is Adaptive Techniques.

Throughout the course, candidates are given different scenarios and task limitations to help them better understand how to support divers with varying abilities underwater. The goal is to encourage problem-solving, communication, adaptability, and teamwork during the dive experience.

This course is extremely close to our hearts at Sierra Madre Divers, and it’s one of our favourites to teach.

Some of the scenarios we worked through were:

👉 Limited leg mobility | Compass Navigation
👉 Reduced lower body mobility | R + R BCD
👉 Single-arm task management | Regulator Recovery

📆 JULY 29 IDC is coming up (still a couple spots!) 🤿 You’ll complete the IDC training by 11 August, and the IE between 12-13 August. So... in just under 3 months you’ll be fully qualified to teach scuba diving anywhere in the world calling your name.

👉 In this reel, we’re doing some IDC specialties (Adaptive Techniques). Adding specialties to your diving repertoire boosts your chances of hireability.

Fololowing on from yesterday, a snippet of the pre-dive training brief before getting on the boat. Dive 2 builds directly on basic technical foundations. You will practice trim and positioning, buddy checks, simulated out-of-air (air sharing) scenarios, hovering at neutral buoyancy off the bottom, and the initial ex*****on of regulator/tank valve shutdown drills.

🌊 Technical diving relies on strict team awareness and gas redundancy. During this dive, you and your buddy will practice taking turns simulating a regulator failure or out-of-air situation

🤿 Proper hovering is critical for conducting decompression stops safely without damaging the environment or dropping through your depth limits.

🪸 You will learn to properly handle gas switches and alternate regulators, ensuring you can manage your valves and regulators without losing control of your buoyancy.

And more, but remember - this is just a very tiny snippet of a pretty in-depth technical diving course.

On Tec40 dive two with Johnny - learning to deploy an SMB in a tec sidemount configuration requires meticulous buoyancy control and strict task management. Because you have multiple independent cylinders, the goal is to deploy the buoy smoothly from a stationary, horizontal trim position without floating upward or snagging any equipment.

First try here, and he did pretty well!

The next dive was perfect - but Instagram is always a highlight reel, and honestly - we are keen to show the learning process a little bit. You might see a whole lot os absolutely perfect trim in tec on social media... but these course dives are always the starting point, and we think it’s important to share some of what ACTUALLY goes on beneath the waves.

Tecrec on the Wreck 😅 Sometimes we head down to the wreck in Alona, and watch 2-3 different dive groups descend, look at the wreck and then leave. As tec divers, we have the luxury of time at depth - and that’s something really special.

As you know, time is everything underwater. It can be the 2 minutes extra that the whaleshark cruised past, or the eagle ray... it’s just incredible. Bohol is really an incredible place to learn tec diving, theres SO MUCH HERE it’s crazy.

Feel free to walk into Sierra Madre Divers on Alona anytime you like to grab a beer and chat about what tec dive training could look like for you. It’s one of our favourite things to teach for sure.
