Southern Leyte Advances Marine Conservation Through Community Dive Training and Coral Restoration Efforts 🪸✨

Southern Leyte’s coastal waters are becoming more than just home to vibrant marine ecosystems — they are becoming spaces where learning, collaboration, and conservation come together. Across the province, communities are taking a more active role in protecting the seas, proving that safeguarding marine resources is a shared responsibility.

In line with this commitment, the Provincial Government of Southern Leyte launched its Community-Based Dive Training Program, an initiative designed to strengthen local participation in marine conservation. More than teaching diving skills, the program empowers public servants to become frontline advocates for ocean protection by building a pool of trained community divers who can support the management and preservation of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

Participants from various Local Government Unit (LGU) offices, particularly from Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, Environment, and Tourism sectors, were brought together to create a multi-skilled team capable of responding to different coastal and marine-related needs. Their training equips them to assist in environmental monitoring, support tourism activities, address marine concerns, and participate in conservation initiatives whenever needed.

Beyond developing technical skills, the program reinforces a larger purpose — protecting and restoring coral reef ecosystems that sustain marine biodiversity and coastal communities. Through initiatives like coral gardening and community-based training, Southern Leyte continues to invest in local capacity and collective action, strengthening its vision of sustainable marine stewardship while reinforcing its identity as one of Eastern Visayas’ emerging dive destinations.

Beyond offering an exciting diving adventure, the initiative highlights the vital role of sustainable tourism and marine conservation while further establishing Sogod Bay as one of the Philippines’ emerging premier dive destinations.

Participants are immersed not only in the region’s breathtaking natural wonders but also in the warmth of local hospitality, fostering a deeper appreciation of the interconnected roles of tourism, environmental stewardship, and community development.

The event also serves as a platform for strengthening partnerships among government agencies, tourism enterprises, dive operators, and local stakeholders in advancing responsible, inclusive, and sustainable tourism across Eastern Visayas.

As the Sogod Bay Underwater Experience unfolds, DOT Region VIII reaffirms its commitment to promoting sustainable marine tourism and inspiring more travelers to discover the captivating wonders beneath the waters of Southern Leyte.
