In the 1600s, some Japanese Christian refugees and Ronin samurai fled persecution in Japan and found safe haven in the Philippines. Many settled in Cavite and Pangasinan, where their descendants still carry surnames like Muraoka, Nakamura, Fujii, and Uchida.
These Japanese immigrants intermarried with locals and integrated into Filipino society, forming “Nihon-machi” (Japanese towns). They were skilled in carpentry, shipbuilding, and even served in Spanish colonial militias.
