Overrated by his peers or Misjudged by the Numbers?

The Athletic’s anonymous player pool considered the Pacers’ point guard Tyrese Haliburton as the most overrated NBA player with 14.4% of the vote. This percentage of votes showed a dramatic increase from last year’s 3.7% of NBA players considering Tyrese as the most overrated NBA player. However, while the label on Haliburton stings, does this poll result support the claim of his peers?

THE ACCUSATION AND CRITICISM

Some NBA players believed that Haliburton’s flash – deep threes, no-look passes – masks flaws: inconsistency in the crunch time, defensive lapses, and media hype that outweighs substance. Some players perceive that his numbers may be inflated due to the system prioritizing paces and volume. Some think that Haliburton is being treated like a superstar without proving it first.

Stephon Castle of the San Antonio Spurs was named the 2024-2025 NBA Rookie of the year. This marks the second consecutive year that Spurs rookies won the award - Spurs bigman Wembanyama won last year's award and the 4th time by a Spurs rookie - David Robinson (89-90) and Tim Duncan (97-98).

In 81 games (47 starts) this season, Castle averaged 14.7 points, 4.1 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 0.9 steals while shooting 42.8% from the field and 28.5% from down town. Castle started his career coming off the bench but eventually had a starting role after De'Aaron Fox season ending finger injury.

Chris Wilcox will not show up in many highlight reels today – but in the mid-2000s, he was quietly one of the NBA’s most explosive finishers in space. A high-flying big who thrived in transition feasted off lobs, and brought relentless energy. Wilcox was a perfect example of a player who did not need plays drawn for him to make an impact.

INTRO

Wilcox was drafted 8th overall in 2002 by the Los Angeles Clippers from Maryland. Wilcox has a championship pedigree – 2002 NCAA title, and NBA-level athleticism. However, he struggled with lack of consistent role on a stacked Clippers roster, however, his trade to Seattle unleashed his potential.
Wilcox was never going to be a star in the NBA, but he was the kind of forward needed by every team in the 2000s: runs the floor, finishes strong at the basket, rebounding machine, and does not complain.

THE PEAK – 2005 – 2008 (SUPERSONICS)
