It is with deep sadness that the Mindanao State University Karate Club (MSUKC) announces the passing of ๐บ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ช๐๐๐๐ ๐บ. ๐ซ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐-๐ช๐๐๐๐๐ last May 7, 2026.
Sensei Chona was not just a member of MSUKC. She was family. She was the foster daughter of MSUKC Founder, Prof. Punduma Sumndad Sani, Hanshi, and one of the people who helped build and shape the organization during its early years.
She started training under Hanshi in 1988 at a time when martial arts was heavily dominated by men. As one of the few women inside the dojo, she earned respect through hard work, discipline, and courage. She never asked for special treatment. She trained, competed, and proved herself through dedication and consistency. In time, she made history by becoming the first-ever lady president of MSUKC.
She proudly represented MSUKC in both Kata and Kumite competitions during her college years and carried the name of the club with pride wherever she went.
Although Sensei Chona was a non-Muslim, she blended naturally with the MSUKC family, whose members were mostly Muslims. She respected the culture, traditions, and people around her, and because of that, she became deeply respected and loved in return. From the older members who trained beside her during the early years, down to the younger karatekas who knew her later in life, she was treated with genuine respect and affection until her final moments.
Many of the foundations of MSUKC today still carry her contributions.
She initiated the kiddy program, which later became the Summer Karate Outreach Program. To date, the program continues to produce athletes who proudly represent the Bangsamoro youth in various competitions.
She was also the person behind the publication of the historic MSUKC Handbook in 1992, which helped preserve the history, principles, and identity of the organization. In the same year, she played a major role in the SEC registration of MSUKC, helping secure the clubโs foundation for future generations.
Beyond her achievements, those who knew Sensei Chona will remember her simplicity, loyalty, quiet dedication, and sincere love for MSUKC.
Today, we remember not only a former president and karateka, but also a daughter of the founder, a mentor, a sister, a friend, and one of the women who helped build MSUKC into what it is today.
๐ป๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐, ๐บ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ช๐๐๐๐. ๐
Your legacy will forever remain in the hearts of the MSUKC family.
May our Almighty grant you eternal peace and mercy.
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajiโun.
Until we meet again...๐๏ธ
