WHAT HAPPENED TO BOSSONG?

Throwback article:
Fil-Am runner hoping to represent PH
Published by Malaya Business Insight
Publication Date is March 30, 2026

Filipino-American distance runner Victoria Bossong’s bid to represent the country internationally through legislation is finally getting on track.

A former Harvard athletics varsity ace, came to Manila on her own and paid a courtesy call at the House and Senate seeking naturalization.

Although her dentist mother, Annie Atienza Bossong, was born a Filipino and is a native of Puerto Galera, Misamis Oriental, FilAm Sports head Bo Navarro, whose outfit has been supporting the athlete, explained that because of some legal glitches, “the only route for her to represent the Philippines is through naturalization, which she is willing to undergo."

The comely athlete, who graduated with honors with a BS Neuroscience degree from the American Ivy League school ran a personal best of one minute and 59.48 seconds in the 800 meters Tom which she set at the Jones Invitational on April 19, 2025 at the Percy Beard Track in Gainesville, Florida.

Her time is superior to the gold-medal time of 2:03.20 set by Sri Lankan Tharushi Karunatna in the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, and 2:00.08 by Chinese Wu Hongiao in the 2025 Asian Athletic Championships in Gumi, South Korea.

Bossong, who is ranked No. 65 in the World Athletics rankings in the 800-meter run and a guest at the recent PSC Women in Sports Awards, is hoping that her naturalization would be complete before the 20th Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, by September.

VETERAN RACEWALKER INTENDS TO REPRESENT THE PHILIPPINES 🇵🇭

Filipino-German Nathaniel Seiler easily established a new Philippine record time of 43 minutes and 53.38 seconds, in the men’s 10,000m race walk at the ICTSI Philippine Athletics Championships 2026 with a bang at the New Clark City Stadium.

The 30-year old Seiler, who previously competed in the 50km walk for Germany in the Tokyo Olympics five years ago, eclipsed the more than three decades-old national mark of 44:28.08 set by Sonny Diaz in the 1995 Chiang Mai SEA Games in Thailand.

Indonesia’s Hendro Yap, the 2025 SEA Games 20-km Walk Champion, bagged the silver with a time of 45:58.88, as Vincent Vienmar Dela Cruz of Spectrum Runners placed third in 47:37.94.

Seiler, whose mother Leticia Abunda hails from Borongan Eastern Samar, shared that he got his Philippine passport early this year and is awaiting for the approval of his allegiance change from the World Athletics.

A former soldier-athlete in the German army, Seiler's immediate target is competing in the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan in September and hopefully in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Maligayang Araw ng Kasarinlan! 🇵🇭

LET'S GO, EJ!

Filipino pole vault star EJ Obiena is shaking up his Olympic-level preparations, officially announcing a strategic move of his training base from Formia, Italy, to Athens, Greece. The former world No. 2 standard-bearer is launching an extended training camp in the Greek capital to immerse himself in a high-intensity, elite training environment ahead of major international competitions.

The decision stems from Obiena’s desire to recapture a daily competitive edge after spending the last couple of years training mostly solo. While expressing immense appreciation for his legendary long-time mentor, Coach Vitaliy Petrov, Obiena noted that training alone lacked the critical push needed to sharpen his performance. In Greece, he will be training day in and day out alongside a premier group of international vaulters.

"As goes the training, so goes the competition," Obiena shared, highlighting that everyday rivalries with world-class peers are what ultimately wins medals. Expressing deep gratitude to Coach Vitaliy for making him reach unimaginable heights, the Filipino athletics icon stated he is highly motivated by the transition, eager to let a fresh environment of fierce competitors push him to his absolute best.
