The UST Mountaineering Club celebrates the birthday of its founder, Doc. Augustus “Gus” Guerrero, as the organization marks its 57th anniversary!

What started as a shared passion for the outdoors became a lasting movement under Doc Gus’ guidance. His foresight laid the groundwork for decades of student leadership, environmental advocacy, and trail excellence in the Philippine highlands.

Fifty-seven years later, every batch that takes to the trails carries forward the values and spirit he instilled in the organization's foundation. Thank you for setting the path, Doc Gus.

Fifty-seven years ago, the UST Mountaineering Club was founded with the purpose of bringing people together in pursuit of the heights.

Since August 14, 1969, under the vision of Doc. Augustus “Gus” Guerrero, USTMC has stood as a home for generations of mountaineers. Through decades of changing trails, our commitment to resilience, teamwork, and respect for the environment has never wavered.

Here’s to fifty-seven years of history, and to the next summits ahead.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT:

As a duly recognized student organization of the University of Santo Tomas, the UST Mountaineering Club (USTMC) advocates for the preservation of Sibuyan Island and condemns the mining operations of Altai Philippines.

As responsible mountaineers, we are committed to advancing the conservation of Sibuyan Island, known as the "Galápagos of Asia" and home to Mt. Guiting-Guiting. The island harbors unique ecosystems and species found nowhere else in the world. Preserving its mountains, forests, and watersheds is vital to sustaining its biodiversity and safeguarding its natural heritage for present and future generations.

Development must never come at the expense of biodiversity, clean water, or the well-being of the communities of Sibuyan Island.

USTMC stands in solidarity with those working to protect Sibuyan Island and remains steadfast in its commitment to its conservation.

No to Destructive Mining in Sibuyan.

Throwing it back to when we took on the walls! Held at Power Up Centro Atletico, the UST Mountaineering Club successfully accomplished its Advanced Mountaineering Course 1: Basic Ropemanship. 🧗‍♂️

Throughout the course, participants stepped into the world of technical climbing, learning that progress is built on precision and trust. Focusing on essential knots, harnesses, and vertical movement, AMC 1 emphasized that mastering the ropes is not just about reaching the top, but ensuring safety and confidence in every ascent. 🧗‍♀️🧵

We extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who participated, supported, and made that AMC 1 a success. With sharper technical skills and stronger bonds, we continue to move forward more prepared and more ready for the vertical paths ahead. 🤝⛰️

Our fourth climb this academic year led us to the trails of Mount Irid in Sta. Ines, a journey that challenged both our endurance and determination. ⛰️🌿

With its multiple river crossings, steady ascents, and rugged terrain, Mt. Irid tested not just our physical strength, but our perseverance and mental grit. For many, it meant pushing past limits and embracing discomfort; for others, it was an opportunity to guide, support, and uplift fellow members along the trail.

It wasn’t just about reaching the summit, but about showing up for each other along the way — sharing water, stories, and the quiet kind of encouragement that keeps you going when the trail gets rough. And at the top, it all made sense: the views, the laughs, the feeling of earning every single step.

Here’s to stronger legs, resilient hearts, and the climbs that shape us — both on and off the trail. ⛰️

Held at UP Diliman, the UST Mountaineering Club successfully accomplished its Basic Mountaineering Course 4 for this year’s batch of aspiring mountaineers. 🏞️

Throughout the course, participants deepened their understanding of land navigation, an essential skill that goes beyond simply finding directions. With maps, compasses, and critical thinking, BMC 4 emphasized the importance of awareness, decision-making, and responsibility in the outdoors. 🧭

Same trails, new heights, and even better memories. ⛰️🌊

For our third training climb (and this year’s fun climb!), we made our way up to Mt. Dayungan before heading down to the shores of Nagsasa Cove. It was a day of steady climbs, deep breaths, and the kind of laughter that makes the trail feel lighter.

From summit snaps to seaside sunsets, every step reminded us why we love doing this — together. Blisters fade, but the memories (and inside jokes) definitely won’t.

Here’s to stronger strides, closer bonds, and more mountains ahead. 💚

Held at the Kapatiran-Kaunlaran Foundation, the UST Mountaineering Club successfully accomplished its Basic Mountaineering Course 3 for this year’s batch of mountaineers. 🏕️

Throughout the course, participants took a vital step forward in their mountaineering journey by training in Standard First Aid and Basic Life Support. From life-saving techniques to proper emergency response, BMC 3 emphasized the importance of safety, preparedness, and responsibility—skills that extend beyond the mountains and into real-life situations.

More than a technical requirement, BMC 3 became a reminder of what it means to look after one another. The course strengthened trust, confidence, and the shared commitment to care for every member of the climb, especially when facing the unexpected.

This year’s BMC 3 reinforced the values that ground the USTMC community—competence in action, compassion in service, and commitment to every journey we take together. 🌄

We extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who participated, supported, and made this BMC 3 a success. With these lessons learned, we move forward more prepared, more united, and more ready for the trails ahead. ✨
